How to Save Money at Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This veterinary office is great! It is definitely worth it to bring your pet here. My family first started taking our dog here when our previous vet dismissed a large under-paw infection. From the first appointment we knew that they cared about the well-being of our dog. The vets and techs here aren’t pushy and fully talk about what’s getting done and the cost, being fully transparent. They will even print out a cost-rundown before paying so you are informed. The cost of prescriptions and medications is relatively inexpensive, similar to what rural vets charge. GT Vet is also very flexible with appointment/test times and scenarios . Our dog needed to be seen due to an ear infection, but they didn’t have time for him in the schedule. We were able to drop him off and have him get seen when they had spare time. My dog gets especially anxious, so during our first few appointments they allowed us to wait in the car before going in. Overall a great group of vets and techs that actually care about both you and your dog!

We LOVE Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital! First of all everyone that works there is SO NICE. They care SO MUCH about our pets and are really collaborative in the way they develop treatment plans that work for you and your pet. They have a generous referral program and they offer complimentary packets for new puppies. Those are just a couple of examples that showcase the thoughtfulness that they put into every step of the process. Their pricing is fair and their service goes above and beyond. They make it so easy for clients to communicate with them offering phone, text, and email channels. GT Veterinary Hopsital is a very inclusive environment and they practice trauma-informed care.

I was having severe back pain that rated a 10 out of 10 on the pain scale. I called the GT vet clinic and asked if I could reschedule my dog Charlie's appointment as I was having a difficult time walking. They went on to tell me that they would still have to charge me an office fee for not calling 24 hours ahead of time. I had no idea that I would be having back pain on this day...so I was a little upset. However after trying to reschedule the appointment I told them I would be there that day at the appointment time. It was then said that they could come to my car to get Charlie...I was so relieved. The pain was that bad. Charlie was in and out of there in about 5 minuets. I sincerely appreciated their kind gesture. They take such great care of him every time he has to go and I couldn't be more happier with their service. Thank you Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital for your kindness and caring for not only the pets but for the dog Mom's too.

nothing but positive things to say. they treated my jasmine a few months back when she got cancer. still had. to come back and make a review since i’ve been recommending them to everyone. jasmine was a more aggressive cat towards strangers but dr. roeters still handled her amazingly!! when it was time to put her down everyone in the office, especially dr. roeters, was extremely kind. they even sent us a personalized letter afterwards ! best vet experience i’ve had and will continue to use them for my other three cats

Dr Jossens has always been wonderful and taken such good care of my dogs. I recently transferred back to GT Vet from Banfield because I knew I would much rather go without being locked into a monthly plan just to save some money with a vet that treated my dogs like “just another patient”. Dr J has always been very dedicated and caring. She is very attentive and always thoroughly explains the care she gives. When I put my 15 yr old Golden down 6 years ago, I knew without a doubt that I wouldn’t have wanted to go through that pain with any other vet! I’m very happy to be back with the GT Vet family because I know my 2 Golden girls will have the best care now!
