How to Save Money at Bay Area Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

5 stars is not enough for this place! Dr Karen and Abae We’re fantastic when we had to rush our 5 month puppy in late in the night on a Saturday, they did not hesitate one bit to get going and find out what was wrong with our baby girl. They both were very informative, and answered all of our questions in depth. As hard as it was to leave with out our baby both my husband and I knew she was being left in great care. This place will give you every detail of what they will be doing with your pet plus send updates while your pet is there and answer any questions you have! They give a very detailed plain of care with all expected costs as soon as your pets exam is done. One of the vet techs even sent us a picture of our girl while she was away which made our day! When we arrived to pick up our girl new staff was on shift and they were just as great and went over a very detailed care plain for recovery and answered all questions and made sure we were comfortable with everything before taking our baby home. This place really Does care and love what they do! Our girl was so excited to come home and is receiving great so far! If it was not for this place I do not think our baby would be with us

Our puppy Willow got parvo the very week her vaccines were scheduled. We took her here and they all treated us so kindly and understanding but most importantly is she recovered! We hated ourselves for this happening and the staff knew that and did their best to help Willow as well as us get through this. They tried to be cost conscious and still help our baby survive. I will forever be grateful to the entire staff and a very hard lesson was learned vaccinate immediately and don’t take them out and about until then. Thank you all for helping us bring our baby home alive!

We recently had to take our 9 year old black lab to the ER. The folks were amazing! They were compassionate and quick. Our girl was diagnosed with a large tumor on her spleen. Unfortunately, we had to put her down. But we cannot praise your hospital any more! We have had to take other pets to ER’s in other areas. The fees were sky high! Thanks to Bay Area Pet Hospital for your care and compassion. For our girl and to my husband who had to bring her in.

I had to take my senior dog in last night with what I thought was trouble breathing. They got her in the second we walked in the door. Thankfully, her heavy panting was due to a fever and not breathing issues. I was a complete emotional train wreck as she has been been service dog for many years. She is retired now, but she is my soul dog and loosing her is extremely painful to digest. The staff were kind and compassionate and totally respected my feelings, and my dogs. I absolutely would go back to this emergency clinic without hesitation. I wish more people were as kind and compassionate as the woman who took care of my girl (and I) at this clinic.

we’ve had two separate occasions with the emergency vet here and each time they provided compassionate care and excellent communication with us and we were thankful to have our two dogs come out better than how they entered. I can’t say enough good things about the staff and doctors here at Bay Area Pet Hospital.
