How to Save Money at Paw Paw Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our visit to Paw Paw Veterinary Clinic was under very unfortunate circumstances. Our dogs health was declining rapidly and our regular clinic could not get us in. I called Paw Paw and they were able to get us an emergency appointment within a couple of hours. After numerous labs and an ultrasound our fears were confirmed and we were faced with saying goodbye to our family dog. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Dr.Baker and all of the staff were! When we are ready to welcome another pet into our family we will definitely be taking them to this clinic for everything!

We took our dog in for her yearly exam/shots. The vet and staff were great with our dog and the exam was thorough. We were also impressed with the long history in this area and their new building. We hope to have a long relationship with this clinic.

This is our first dog with Paw Paw Veterinary Clinic/Dr. Baker. We started going to them in April 2020 with our "Covid Puppy." I was immediately pleased with Dr. Bakers straightforward and thorough manner. We have (unfortunately) had LOTS of visits due to allergies, ear infections, skin infections etc... YES it is pricey. However, everything is pricey these days including the cost of owning a pet and taking care of them responsibly. Dr Baker has been very good about offering no fee follow up appointments and alternatives to treatments (most expensive versus less expensive but maybe more time consuming). Full transparency (because nothing and no one is perfect), I appreciate, understand & get along better with Dr Baker than my hubs does.... I think it's because we are both females who care for patients (hers just happen to be fur patients). I would recommend this clinic without hesitation.

My cat was referred here by another vet to have a procedure. Everyone from the first consult to dropping her off to pick up were amazing. They called me to let me know all was well after the procedure. I checked in that night apologizing for being the crazy cat lady, but I needed to check on my baby and have that reassurance all was well again, being the worry wort I am. I believe I talked to Laura who was awesome and understanding and even invited me to call back in the morning to check again if needed. Every employee I came in contact with were happy and helpful. Kudos to all and million thanks!

I can’t even begin to express how grateful we are for this clinic. From the first time we brought our pets in, the staff were friendly and welcoming. My dogs have never been more comfortable with a vet team (they were/are 10 and 4 and have cycled through 3 different clinics). Service is always quick, affordable (as mush as a vet can be) and 1000% tailored toward the pet and their owner. All staff are extremely knowledgeable and truly get to know their clients/pets. Recently, my 10 year old doodle became extremely ill. Paw Paw Vet’s team jumped right in, collaborating every step of the way, leaving no stone unturned to find out what was going on. Plenty of options were provided to us, and no judgement was ever made based on our decisions (and they weren’t easy ones)! I truly couldn’t ask for a better care team. As someone who works in healthcare, I have met very few nurses/doctors/techs with this type of bedside manner and passion for their work! Dr. Davis, Dr. Baker, Kayla, Megan, and Matt went above and beyond for our family these past few weeks, and then some. If you’re thinking about switching clinics or looking for a vet for your new 4 legged friend, choose Paw Paw Vet!!
