How to Save Money at Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I will be forever grateful to Dr. Sackman for helping my girl Tali with her noise phobia. While she's not perfect Tali is 80% better than she was when we started seeing her 6 months ago. Dr. Sackman is very knowledgeable but her true compassion for animals is what sets her apart from others. I know she truly cares about my dog and wants her to live her best life.

Dr. Sackman has been such a great help to me and my cat Rue in getting her adjusted to life indoors (which Rue really loves) and living with another cat (which Rue really did NOT love). Rue had some failed adoptions before me, but we knew she was very sweet under all the spiciness and just needed some time and help to learn how to get along with others. Dr. Sackman got her some anti-anxiety meds to take the edge off while she settled, sent me resources on how to leash-train Rue to burn off all the extra energy (Rue LOVES hiking on her leash!), and gave me excellent tools for slow, healthy introductions between cats. Rue has now adopted a stray kitten I was fostering, and loves to play, groom, and nap with her new best friend; something I never would have thought possible when I first adopted her. Dr. Sackman helped me get my girl from "ghost pepper spicy" to "cinnamon-sugar sweet" and I'm so thankful! Not a lot of people know there are options for cat behaviorists and either choose to live with the challenging behaviors, or they give up on their cat, but Dr. Sackman offered another option! I loved that she's been upfront with me from the beginning about what my expectations should be, and how long it could take. It was so worth it. Don't wait for a behavior to get worse--call as soon as you see something so everyone can live more comfortably! Here's a picture of Rue (all white) snuggling her new bestie, Tupelo.

We believe Dr. Jill Sackman is one of the best dog behaviorists in the country. Not only does she have behaviorist certification, but she has taught other veterinarians who are seeking certification. We had an initial meeting after our dog bit a toddler down the street (which was my fault) and caused three other dogs to bleed. We learned our dog suffered from anxiety and engaged in fear-based aggression. We learned both how to manage the issue and how to address his sensitivity through re-conditioning. If training your dog is really about training the humans, then my husband and I learned from Dr. Sackman all that we needed to become better dog handlers. She is great at listening, explaining, and breaking things down into simple steps. I recommend the follow up appointments, too! We had two or three follow up appointments with Dr. Sackman and they were worth every penny. Just knowing we'd be speaking with her in six months made me confident that I could get answers for management issues that I hadn't yet mastered. Finally, we live in California and used Dr. Sackman's services from her practice in Michigan virtually. The behaviorists in California were fully booked and we are so glad we found a virtual solution and chose her.

Dr. Sackman is wonderful! It’s obvious how much she cares about the animals that she works with, as well as their owners. She’s made such a difference in our anxious dog’s life - our dog has made so much progress, much more than we ever imagined would be possible. We can’t say enough about how skilled and kind Dr. Sackman is!
