How to Save Money at Riverside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had dental surgery on my dog in June. They DEMANDED that I come in & give them a $50 deposit, which I did. The surgery went wonderfully. Great experience. Couple of weeks later while filing the paperwork I noticed the $50 deposit had not been applied to the bill. Stopped in & showed the people the bill & ask for a refund of the &50. They told me that they could only refund it to the card it was charged to. Explained the card had been hacked & was canceled. But they could refund to another card or my debit card. They tried to give me a credit on an account with them. I declined. They told me that their manager was on vacation & would return & call me on Thursday. No call waited until Saturday & called. Now the manager is only in on Thursday & they will have to call their corporate headquarters to see if they can issue me a refund!!! Fast to take your money, but don’t like to give refund when they overcharge you. STAY AWAY. Go to ALL ABOUT ANIMALS. Reasonable rate & do not rip you off.

My furry baby had dental surgery at Riverside. The process from start to finish was explained to me before it was done. My dog had calcification on his teeth and was having a hard time chewing properly. His surgery went well. It has been one week and he is responding to treatment great. I highly recommend Riverside Animal Hospital for your prescious pet's care.

Karen A good one

For the last 30+ years I've trusted Riverside Animal Hospital to care for all my pets needs, big or small. Dr Koan and her staff are hard-working, kind and compassionate to both your animals and their owners during the appointments their stays and pickups. Appointments are on a first come first serve basis. You check-in in the parking lot (by calling) and wait to be called to go in. I do like this system better because you don't have the animals nose to nose and people face to face to spread any kind of sickness in the lobby. All my animals love Dr Koan ❤️

All of the staff are great. Today was a difficult day as I had to put Syrus to rest. We have always been treated with genuine care over the past 14 years. I feel that Dr. Went above and beyond over the years. Grateful to have chosen Riverside for all our needs. Thank you.

I would just go somewhere where you can actually schedule an appointment. I called and asked if they were seeing more patients today and the lady on the phone said “we reopen at 2 so be here then and call when ur in the parking lot” I get there at exactly 2 and call, waited on hold and when she finally answered the phone she said they are “understaffed” and couldn’t see any more patients today. Then why would you tell me to come out there? She could’ve at least told me to be 30 min early or something if that would’ve helped my chances at getting in. Stressed out my cat for nothing and wasted gas. I made an appointment with a vet in Swartz Creek for the following day. I normally go to the vet in Montrose and I highly recommend them. Go to a vet that has proper staffing.
