How to Save Money at Cahill Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot speak highly enough of Cahill Vet. With my 16 year old cat Maggie being a new patient here within the last month, they have welcomed us in with open arms & made us feel like family right away. Dr. Casanova provides not only great attention & care, but is so compassionate & patient — she truly goes above & beyond what other vets provide. Just the time that Dr. Casanova will spend with us on the phone explaining Maggie’s test results, creating a treatment plan, & making sure we can get in to see her as soon as possible, has shown me that her, along with the rest of the Cahill staff, are true gems. We couldn’t be more relieved to have found this place when we did, as we have been able to help Maggie’s health issues so much already in such a short period of time. It has been a weight lifted off my shoulders to know we have more time with her. Thank you for all you do here, your hard work does NOT go unnoticed! ❤️

Noticed my dog had been lethargic for a few days and they made a last minute appointment for my dog when no other place around me had availability. Staff was super welcoming and attentive. Unfortunately, my dog had a ruptured tumor, so we made the tough decision to put her down. Dr. Spiewak and the technicians were extremely empathetic and great through the entire process. Was sent home with a clay paw to remember my dog, and received a sympathy card in the mail today with wonderful messages from the staff. Best experience I've ever had with a vet.

Flexible scheduling. Well-educated, experienced, kind, and competent veterinarians. Our cat babies see Dr. Josh Shoup. He is a phenomenal veterinarian. I have recommended my animal parents to him. He is very passionate about his field of work. He explains procedures and options very detailed and easy to follow. He educates his clients on the best measures to be taken to keep your pet baby healthy. We never feel rushed even though this place stays busy. Our 'old man' cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes and we were very anxious and worried. Dr.Shoup easied our worries and has gone above and beyond on guiding us on the best way to handle and navigate this new diagnosis. This veterinarian hospital covers emergencies to surgeries, numerous procedures, grooming, and everything you may ever need in a vet. Staff have always been very courteous and understanding. The techs are amazing, really connecting with your baby and treating each animal as if it was their own. Highly recommend.

The staff is very caring. Dr. Shoup is great! It is very busy so there is usually a wait but they spend a good amount of time with you. Don't be in a hurry. Facilities are beautiful! It's not the cheapest place, but you get what you pay for.

Very pleased this place took me on such short notice. They arnt the type of vet to rack up your bill with nonsense. They genuinely care about your pet as well as your pocket. They're very up to date with all tools needed to find issues. I'm pleased members of the staff stayed by my girls side as she was put down and waiting to be picked up. Thank you for making me feel at ease with my dog going in a good place with people that actually care. It means a lot to me.
