How to Save Money at The Camden Hospital for Animals

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Bettney and her entire team. I've had my dog for close to a decade and lived in many cities; no one compares to Camden Animal Hospital. My dog had a seizure a few years ago and they took such good care of him, reassuring and supporting us throughout the entire process. Over the past year he has had two ACL replacements and the referrals that they provided have changed our lives. I wish we all had the care that Camden Animal Hospital provides. If I am being budget conscious they are understanding and offer comprehensive care. If it's a larger bill they offer every treatment plan imaginable for you to research.

I cannot praise Dr. Contakos and the entire team here enough. My beautiful cat Nyrah of 18 years was at the end of the line and very sick with kidney failure. We couldn't bare to let her suffer so we called around to see if anyone could help our girl cross the rainbow bridge without having to drive two hours to Portland as our usual vet was out sick. They were so kind to see us immediately and the care they took, the empathy, the compassion, was entirely unmatched. I cannot thank you all enough for helping out sweet girl cross over to the other side in peace. We are deeply indebted to your kindness. Thank you all for your warm hearts. Many thanks and lots of love to you all. ♥️

We went to Camden Hospital for Animals after two pretty terrible experiences with other local vet services. We were frustrated and trying to get answers at a fair price without obvious up-selling of expensive - and unnecessary - services. From the beginning when we called to our wonderful appointment, Camden Animal Hospital provided top notch services. Our vet tech listened to us and passed along correct analysis. She responded quickly, getting our kitty back to be looked at by the doctor. When she brought him back, the doctor quickly followed. Dr. Spoo was absolutely amazing! She clearly explained what she could see and what she couldn’t without additional services. She described multiple courses of action, with varying price points, without judgement or assumption. She was respectful, kind, honest and treated our kitty AND us with compassion and empathy. We highly recommend this veterinary clinic and they certainly got a new family to add to their customer base today.

I had a health emergency with my dog (an elderly pit mix) while on an outer island, and the staff at Camden Hospital for Animals did everything they could to accommodate me despite being booked up. The vet techs and the doctor were very kind and knowledgeable, and did everything they could to lessen my dog’s discomfort. They were also practical and honest about the best way forwards with treatment. All in all, they made a difficult time much easier for me and my pet due to their kindness and professionalism.

My family has taken our pets here for several years now, and had nothing but good experiences. They have always treated our pets like they were their own and gave them lots of love and patience during their visits. It’s clear they care a lot for all the furry creatures that walk through their door. The veterinarians are wonderful at explaining everything that they think needs to be done and answering all our questions. When I got my first dog it was a no-brainer that he was going to go to this clinic!
