How to Save Money at Blake Veterinary Hospital PC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We needed emergency vet services while traveling and this was the only vet after calling about 7 of them, that was open and able to help squeeze us in. You can see the relief on my pups face afterwards (especially when we left with a tennis ball), and everyone that we interacted with was incredibly helpful, kind, and put my mind at ease. Cricket and I can't thank you enough!!

We boarded our dog for one night at the canine inn. It all went well. We were a bit worried since this would be her first time without us but it all worked out. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Thank you for treating Koda well.

I was very anxious about having to board my 2 dogs for the first time. One of my dogs has trust issues with strangers but the staff was so reassuring and knowledgeable about how to deal with this that that put my mind at ease and I have been back 2 more times. The Canine Inn is emaculate and inviting. There is only a small number of kennels so to me that means ‘Less dogs-more attention given! My only suggestion would be to have the option to pick up the dogs on Sunday so as to avoid paying for an unnecessary stay. Overall great experience!

Our extended family has been using Blake Vet for years with largely positive experiences. When we relocated to the area we began using them too. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. However, our most recent visit will be our last. Our dog had an abscess on his lip that has been healing well. As part of his recent exam, we asked if they could double check his lip too. Several minutes in to the appointment, we get a call that our dog is whining and anxious, they would like to sedate him to complete the exam. For us, the risk of sedating him outweighed the risk of the abscess so we said no. The person on the phone responded that staff would do their best to complete the exam with him awake. Our dog has never had issues at the vet, usually we get comments about how well behaved and friendly he is. I suspect he was nervous being in a new place without us and having someone he doesn't know touch a sore spot on his face. We appreciate Blake Vet doing their best to keep animals and people safe during COVID. However, some flexibility to attend appointments with our pet, especially when the alternative is sedation, would be very helpful and result in better care. We'd be happy to wear masks and/or show proof of vaccination and only attend the absolutely necessary parts. In the end, our dog didn't get a thorough exam and we still paid full price.

First time at Dr. Blake's and Staff. We have two yellow labs 8 & 13 yrs old. We brought our dog to have an examination and rabies. Dr. Blake spent a good deal of time cleaning her ears, checking her out completely. His recommendations and care are greatly admired. He called me to communicate his thoughts on our girl ; he seems to be very into his work and takes pride ; including his staff , very nice ! Everyone at Blake's Vet. made us feel welcome !! Thank You !
