How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our Annie into VEG as she started having seizures which we never experienced before. I probably don’t have enough space to type what I want but from the moment we called until the moment we made the best decision for Annie’s quality of life (she was just a month shy of 13) every staff member was so incredibly empathetic. They really make you feel at peace and treat your pet as if they were their own. They even sent us a card, I am truly grateful for everyone there. I will never be able to express how easy, painless and peaceful they made this whole experience.

Couldn't ask for nicer or more attentive staff members. Prices are reasonable as well (been there twice now, hopefully no more). It's a little cold in there so bring some warm clothes if you're waiting around for a while - they did give me a blanket though when I forgot my sweatshirt the second visit. Complimentary water, coffee and granola bars were a fantastic treat when going through a very stressful experience. Thank you VEG!

We live in Southern California and were visiting the area when our yellow lab severely hurt her foot. We called a local vet and they recommended this Vet ER and we are so glad they did. Love the unique open floor plan and the level of care made us feel right at home. All of the vets and techs were friendly and approachable. They listened to all of our concerns and were very transparent throughout the process of caring for our pup. Thankfully the X-rays were clear and we were sent home with some meds to keep our pup comfortable. Hopefully we never need to come back but if we do we know we are in great hands!

My cat Lily got bloodwork done on a Friday and showed her in end stage kidney failure. My vet told me to take her to a pet er immediately. I took Lily to Veg for their open concept in case she did not make so I would be able to be with her. When I got there she was still feeling it from some gabapentin she had the day before and it was not wearing off because of her kidney issues. They admitted her right away as an emergency and gave her an ultrasound to make sure her ureters has not distended. After they made sure nothing else was wrong they hooked her up to an IV and then a second catheter to be able to continuously draw blood. She was there from Saturday morning to Tuesday night. She continuously got better and they were constantly in contact with me to make sure I knew how she was doing. I asked questions to make sure I knew what her prognosis was and they did not beat around the bush or sugar coat anything they were honest and precise. When I asked and they did not have an answer they would ask the vet or look at the most recent research for cats with CKD. I was extremely impressed by the vets and the techs who were there. The front desk staff especially Michelle were wonderful. Unfortunately, I forgot the vets name but I interacted with a couple of them and they were all wonderful. I highly recommend going here. They are compassionate and kind to the animals and their owners. They do require you make a deposit before admitting the pet if they are an emergency. Having worked in healthcare I understand this but dropping $7,000 at the drop if the hat is not for everyone luckily we were able to do this. They do accept care credit for those who cannot. I am grateful for what they did for my cat and that she is better and at home doing eating all the foods and getting all the cuddles. If anything happens to her or my other cats again I will bring them here.

We came to the ER around 8pm on a Friday night and it was hopping! The entire staff is kind and silly and put you right at ease. Be prepared to wait (just like a human ER!), but know that the staff will do everything they can to make your wait comfortable. I would choose them over our previous pet ER any day, and we'll be back the next time Chomps eats a forbidden snack and gives himself gastro problems on a weekend!
