How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Kate is my second dog to be taken care of by Banfield Pet Hospital. First in Florida 2007 ish and then when I moved back to Massachusetts I automatically brought Kate to Banfield because of their care and concern for animals. The staff is outstanding. They treat the animals like they could be theirs. Kate is almost 11 years old is as healthy as ever and a lot of the reason is the care she gets from Banfield . I would definitely advise you to bring your pets to Banfield. They also have great insurance for your pet.

Hunter has been at Bellingham, MA since 7/2015. He has had health issues from dive we’ve had him. His original doc left after year 3. Dr Rose has been amazing! Hunter loves seeing her- not so much on “shot day”! The docs at Banfield helped with setting us up with amazing specialists (which he no longer needs) and we’ve never had a negative experience. The staff is amazing. Hunter, age 9

They read off a script. No feelings or empathy what so ever. They do not care about you or your pets. Brought our pet in for a check because she hadn’t eaten in about a day and the miserable doctor called 20 minutes after drop off to tell us our animal needs to be euthanized she has cancer but they ran no tests only a physical exam and refused to tell us more. We came back in to find out more and see what is going on but we every techs just kept saying I don’t know I wasn’t there during the exam but given her age she isn’t a spring chicken so we shouldn’t be surprised but if you want to spend money on the tests we can. They kept bring up the cost of the tests when we questioned it and saying they take awhile so it might not be worth it the cost like that would defer us from wanting answers we didn’t care about money just wanted answers. Then the rude vet wouldn’t answer our concerns just kept telling us our cat is in pain and we are keeping her in pain that she is won’t live another week. No empathy it was disgusting. I’ve had pets live to 23-24years but a 12 year old cat I shouldn’t be shocked that it’s her time and you refused to tell me anymore? Don’t go here or do and see for yourself how much they don’t care about your animals or you. Out of the 5 people I interacted with only one was genuine. North Attleboro or even Warwick are much better.

My cats have been patients for years. They have no problem calling and emailing to remind you if you're past due for appointments but in an emergency, there was no rush. My 10 year old cat started acting lethargic and weak and not like herself. I thought the heat, maybe a bad mouse, but wanted some professional guidance before running straight to an emergency vet. After all she has a regular vet for this reason. I called at 9am to see if she could be seen or if I should go to an emergency vet. Went through all symptoms and home remedies I had tried in past 24 hours. I was told someone would call me back soon. They called back at 545pm, had me go over all symptoms and remedies again. Placed me on hold to speak to the doctor. Only to come back and say she needed to be seen by an emergency vet. I don't like to leave negative reviews but if this is an emergency then why wasn't it treated that way at 9am when I called? Why call back 15 mins before close to tell me you can't help? Frustrated and dissapointed.

I had the most appalling experience at Banfield in Belair. Despite being a paying member, the receptionist flat-out refused to accept my dog, who had blood in her ear and needed urgent attention. Not only was the receptionist rude, but he also offered zero help or solutions. It's outrageous that in a supposed emergency, they couldn't accommodate us. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Avoid at all costs unless you enjoy terrible service and indifference to your pet's well-being.
