How to Save Money at Dutchtown Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough good things about Dutchtown Animal Hospital. They are thorough, compassionate and understanding. They go above and beyond in every aspect. When my dog Frankie was very sick with pancreatitis and HGE, Dr. Angelette called me personally within the first few hours of my dog being there, to update me on exactly what was going on and what they were doing. It was such a relief to be able to to leave my baby in their care and not have to worry about her being taken care of. Every technician we have ever had has been wonderful. I am so grateful for this vet!

Having just moved to Geismar, I recently visited Dutchtown Animal Hospital with our 18-year old Chihuahua, Kiki. Although it was a difficult time for me and my family, the doctor and the staff there were so kind and compassionate. They provided plenty of options. They worked with us on costs and affordability, laying out in advance what the costs of different procedures and treatments would be. They went into great detail with us in terms we could understand. I will definitely be using Dutchtown Animal Hospital for my “'other babies.” Having visited several other veterinarians and animal hospitals in the area, I can say I was most definitely impressed more by Dutchtown Animal Hospital! And I will certainly refer friends and family to them!

We have used Dutchtown Animal hospital for years. The small /Exotic animal vet, fabulous. Never tries to upcharge or demand things we do not want. On the other hand, the vet that was there when we first started going was great. She left... retired??? Now, if we just want to get our poochies yearly shots, this new doctor refuses. Wanted all kinds of labs ran, stool samples, teeth cleaning, and a full physical. Did not appreciate that we did not want to use the heart worm medication that he was pushing. Told us that if we didn't use it, our poochies would get heart worms. The past two times we toom the poochies in we told him they just need their shots and nails trimmed. Nope, still charged us for a complete physical, the nail trimming, and shots. We left our poochies there. They do not like their nails clipped and take medicine before we go. The first time we were not happy when we paid the bill. When questioning it, we were told that that doctor the doctor gave the poochies a complete physical. We only took them in for yearky shots and nail trimmings. We thought maybe we did not make ourselves clear. That we just wanted their nails trimmed and yearly shots. We paid the bill and went on. After the second time, it happened. We were extremely clear when we scheduled the appointment, when dropped them off, and when we called to see if they were ready. We figured out it was not a misunderstanding. It is several 100 dollars diffrence. Especially with multiple poochies. We have seen multiple discussions on Facebook. Mostly in comments where people ask recommendations for vets in the area. We love the small animal vet, wish she could be our vet for the poochies.

The staff here are welcoming and very hospitable. It can be a bit costly depending on your budget. Be sure to read your bill and ask questions about the charges your are uncertain about.

Update 05/22: Since we took rescued pup here to get him checked out, we have brought all 3 of our pups here ever since. I recently had to help my best friend of 16 years cross rainbow bridge, and they were so amazingly comforting. Dr. Angelette is an absolute angel. I have never seen a more compassionate person - towards your animals and us as their owners. When the time came to say goodbye to my Bella, she crouched down next to me and Bella as I held her...and comforted Bella all the way through until the end. She even shed a tear with me. As painful as that moment was losing my best friend, I will always look back at that experiece with fondness for them making it the best experience they could have possibly made it given the situation. Thank you Dr. Angelette and staff. Your care and kindness mean more than you'll ever know. Original Review: Really pleased with this place. We tried clinic on a whim when we rescued a puppy because it was close to our house. Dr. was amazing and staff very helpful. I love their policy on rescued/shelter pets - they do not charge an initial exam fee...which was a pleasant surprise! Also, very easy and convenient to make appointments...you can usually get in next day! we were so pleased with experience, we began taking our lab Louie there. He went in for a dental this week and they did a great job...I even liked they called the next day to check on him. Great place to take your furbabies!
