How to Save Money at Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists + Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our 12 week old Danny, was lifeless! His vet had did what she could. He was septic, glucose 33, and body temp 92. We carried a lifeless dog in there, and the boy we are bringing home is the same happy little Danny we grew to love. The entire staff were amazing, but Dr. Brad won me over. He asked me to give Danny 24 more hours to try to fight. I thought no way this 2.6 lb baby is pulling through this. Hours later Danny stood, then he ate, then he was 24 hours seizure free. We owe them so much for saving our precious boy. Dr. Brad you have a special place in our hearts, and we thank you for saving our boy!

We took my dog here last night as a recommendation from her primary vet due to him thinking she needed 24/7 monitoring due to a pancreatitis flare up. They were so sweet to her and I truly feel like they helped save her life. There were no surprise costs because the doctor and vet tech explained a rough estimate and everything they thought would need to be done which I really appreciated, and after I paid the deposit the total cost ended up being cheaper than the original estimate. When I walked in to pick her up I could hear the staff engaging with her as if she were their own dogs. She has never been away from me for an extended period of time and they kept her as comfortable as possible. I had a horrible experience with an emergency vet in Richmond Kentucky, and even though that PTSD never goes away this place helped me regain some trust in emergency vet care. Thank you to all the staff who helped Keke!

10/10 recommend this vet hospital!!!! These skilled workers saved our baby. Our dog, she’s a lab and she got fixed earlier that day at a different office, and later in the night jumped up and ripped a stitch, and started hemorrhaging blood from three different areas in her stomach, and bluegrass veterinary clinic was the only 24 hour vet near that would willingly take her with open arms. As soon as we arrived the doctors were standing arms open ready to take our girl into surgery, and kept her over night afterwards and took the best possible care of her. She’s well and healthy and thankfully healthy because of this vet!! Here she was right after staying over night!

we took our sweet girl, carrie, here when we found her suddenly paralyzed in her back two legs and miserable. the veterinarians and techs were so kind and helpful and it was so obvious that they love animals and what they do. they took such great care of our little angel. when her condition worsened, we had her euthanized here at home, and a few days later, we just got a card in the mail from everyone at bluegrass vet specialists. such a kind and sweet touch and a reminder that carrie was loved by everyone she met. thank you all for all that you do, and for doing your best to keep carrie comfortable in her last days.

My cat was hurt on a Sunday evening. They got us in fairly quickly. They took such good care of our fur baby. They were very kind and understanding with us, too. They are upfront about all costs before they do anything, which I appreciate. They are reasonably priced for an emergency, after hours call.
