How to Save Money at Willowbend Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Johnson and his staff saved my cats life! We came in with an emergency and they were able to immediately get us in and save his life - they said they suspected he had minutes. They gave us new medication and have consistently called to check in on his status and see how WE are also doing. I'm going to continue visiting. they've gained a permanent patient.

I would not recommend this place to anybody especiallyyy anybody with a bully mix ! I’m a obsessed dog mom i have a american bulldog/pitbull that’s 1 with a lot of anxiety towards anyyy new people.. but has NEVER growled or shown teeth never has done anything mean to child or adult( i’m trying to work on her being comfortable) i’m very picky where i take Myla because i never wanted to feel this way with her but my past vet (Prairie Ridge) was on the other side of town and i was trying to find something closer i truly didn’t think i’d regret it like i did . Before i get into how they treated her they weren’t very helpful for example i asked the male doctor about foods and he said he heard of them but doesn’t know much about the foods nd pushed off me asking what i should feed her which was weird to me .. I’ll get into how she was treated now the ladies in the front were super nice even though you could tell she was scared they had no problem getting close to Myla or interacting with her and getting information from me about Myla . From the start with the doctor it was red flag he didn’t even give her a chance see her or nothing he walked into the room with a muzzle (which i’m well aware that is not how they do it with every dog) He didn’t attempt to get close to Myla at all he asked me from the get go if she’s bitten anyone the assistant was smiling and at least touching myla .. but i told him no about biting and i told him i’m not comfortable with a muzzle multiple times and that i would help he told me no but proceeded to let me hold her while he was looking at her bumps she had (the reason i went) he was really hesitant and did nothing like praise or try to comfort Myla he was not 1% sympathetic for Myla which i look for in my doctor for my furry friend definitely ! after they left to get a estimate he came back told me they have to muzzle her to do the slide on her or he wouldn’t work on her so i agreed and said i wasn’t staying in the room then because i don’t think its fair Myla had to get muzzled knowing she was already terrified.. anyways right when i walk into the room the assistant first comment was “she didn’t bite” they lost all their chances and respect for me after that. i might be a little crazy over my baby but making me feel that way or treating Myla some way makes me uncomfortable i’m very sensitive about my girl... it is 2023 as a DOCTOR at a vet you should not be that scared of a nervous pitbull or act like that towards her !!

Shout out to the two ladies working at 6pm on May 15th, 2023. My hamster had a stroke and needed to be put down. They immediately read our faces when we came in and were super sweet. They promised to make sure my hamster was held and loved before she passed. I was offered to stay during the euthanasia or visit her after, but I opted out. The ladies were very comforting and promised to take good care of my sweet baby.

Doctor Johnson and his staff are very thorough, kind and caring in their treatment for my dog. They are a very personable staff. When Doctor Johnson treats my dog I feel he cares for him as if he were his own dog. Even though my dog isn't so thrilled about some of his treatments he is always excited to come to Willowbend Animal Hospital.

Dr Johnson is such a calming presence to me and my cats every time I come in. Even when sometimes there are hard conversations to be had about my cats health. He’s very thorough in his assessments and answer any questions I have. He’s very gentle with my cats & patient when they’re scared. The techs and other team members there are also amazing. They’re always so friendly and remember me and my pets. They always provide an invoice and approval before doing anything going forward so we’re not surprised by the cost and they accept CareCredit which has been so helpful. I am so grateful for this place and trust my pets life with him and his team.
