How to Save Money at Blackbob Pet Hospital & Cat Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Carita Meyer at the Cat Clinic is fantastic. My 2yr old male cat, Porcini, was unwell over the weekend, vomiting a couple of times, eating/drinking very little, and keeping to himself. Even though the weather wreaked havoc with appts, I was able to get him in at Tues 4pm. This was my first visit to Blackbob Pet Hospital, and I came here because of several referrals from both cat/dog people I know. I was very impressed with the way the cat examining rooms are set up to minimize fear and help calm cats. They have cat toys, a climbing apparatus on the wall, and places for cats to hide. (My cat is a "hider" but still investigated everything.) Porcini was definitely calmer than he had been at our previous vet. The vet techs were professional, friendly and good with Porcini. Dr. Carita Meyer was awesome. She asked me many questions to find out what could be happening, examined him, and she came up with a treatment plan. We took bloodwork and discovered he had pancreatitis. After some IV fluids (he was dehydrated, too, from not drinking enough) and a shot to calm his tummy (pancreatitis can cause them a very painful tummy ache), we went home. Within an hour he had perked up and went to his water bowl and started drinking. He ate a spoonful of wet food and held it down. The next morning, it was like he was almost his old self! He was up and about, drinking and eating like normal, with no vomiting or apparent stomach upset. He even brought me his mouse to throw and play fetch with him! I thought the bill was fair, not cheap but not expensive, and prices were discussed beforehand. They took a lot of time with my pet, which I appreciated. Just a note, I did have to wait 20-25 min for the bloodwork to run, but I was told ahead of time & said I was ok to wait. I ended up spending about 2 hrs there, which was necessary. I wish my "people" doctor would be as thorough with my issues! Another thing that impressed me-- at EVERY other vet I've been to throughout my life, and I was bringing in my pet because of illness, not something routine--if my pet was close or past due on shots, other vets would push to get those done immediately even though my pet was there for illness. I mentioned this to the vet tech, and she thoughtfully explained that they don't believe in doing that, because the pet may feel worse or have an adverse reaction. I LOVE the fact that they are thinking about your pet, not making a few extra dollars. It would have been so easy, but they didn't do it. Dr Meyer also called the day after our visit to check on Porcini to be sure he was doing well, and see if I had any other questions. How great is that? Even though this place is a 30 min drive for me, I will be back because of the professional, great care here. Would definitely recommend for cats.

My cat was limping and needed an exam. He’s afraid of going to the vet and is a difficult patient . The cat clinic handled him like pros. The environment is calming and designed specifically for cats with individual rooms that are clean and have toys. They did an excellent job of working with my cat and I appreciate knowing I can bring him to a place that understands the unique needs of felines.

After 2 er visits and 1 regular vet visit (not here) these wonderful, empathetic humans said they would get my beloved Lucifer in to be seen. The doctor was so sweet, nice, caring, very communicative with me about everything that I needed to know, and even told me she has gone through the same thing with her cats. I couldn't save my kitty, but he is not in pain anymore. If you ever have to put your loved one down, go here. They are nothing short then amazing when it comes to comforting their clients during euthanasia of an animal. This is a far drive from where I live, but after having so many horrible experiences with other vets in town, I finally found my lifelong veterinarian here. I will gladly make the drive. Her tech was also amazingly compassionate, helpful, informative, and empathetic. My Lucifer went so peacefully and comfortably. They even sedated him before the final shot which I liked. So much more humane then what I experienced in 2020 with putting my 17 year old Mia down at another place. You will not be disappointed if you come here. 🤟🏼 RIH Lucifer

Not a big Google review guy, but I do have to give huge respect to the Blackbob Animal Hospital for their service today. (1.18.23) They really took the time to sit down and discuss with me the specific questions I had about about taking care of my cat, as well as making sure he was in tiptop shape. Really recommending these guys..after making a few phone calls today, they got me in the same day and the customer service was top-notch.

I was out of town and needed a refill for an important medication for my dog, and this clinic happily and quickly accommodated the transfer of refill.
