How to Save Money at Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Care West - Open 24 Hours

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This was our third time here with our current dog Misha. She is a very active and sometimes mischievous GSD. Our previous dog had to be seen for a deteriorating vertebrae in her neck. Unfortunately, euthanasia was the only compassionate choice. The staff has been professional, caring, and kind. Misha says, “Thanks again, friends.”

Called the clinic at 3am because Muffin was constipated after more than 36 hours of not going. We traveled to Indiana to visit family for Thanksgiving week, and she had a side effect from the meds we gave her to handle the flight. She was whimpering and her stomach was bloated — I had to get her help. Coming from SF, I was super impressed that there are at least five emergency pet facilities near where my family lives. We only have one near us. I was also surprised that someone actually picked up the phone at 3am and told us to come right in — no million questions, no requests for records, nothing to slow down the process. It was an 11-minute drive, and she was seen as soon as we arrived. Wow. My ER experiences in SF are nothing like this. When everything was done, they gave her a probiotic and a laxative, and the total was $147 for the exam plus meds. WOW. In SF, just the emergency exam alone is $500. Muffin has recovered well and is happily doing her business in the snow now. Thank you to this clinic — and SF, seriously… what are we doing?

We had to put our beautiful one year old cat down due to liver failure and they were the nicest people. they continued to give us time with our kitty and make sure we were okay. after she was put down they let us just sit with here and hold her. that was definitely the hardest moment ive ever gone through and they made the process a bit easier. i just woke up and went into the mailbox and they sent us a card. thank you for being such amazing staff and please dont ever stop being you 💗

The entire staff were so kind and patient on one of the worst days of my life, losing my dog Allie. They were honest, explained every process and i never felt rushed or pressured. I can’t imagine how hard it may be working a job like that but the compassion they give really goes a long way. Can’t recommend this place enough

10/10 experience. Everyone there, from the CSRs at the desk to the nurses to the vets were personable, helpful, and well educated. I took our cat in for an unknown leg injury and I was kept informed on his status, given the opportunity to contribute to the care plan, and provided with clear information and instructions. The facility was very clean and I appreciated having a personal room to wait in instead of being stuck in the lobby. I was there four hours, but I anticipated that and planned accordingly. I wish everyone knew that animal ERs work like human ERs - the most urgent needs get addressed first, so there may be a long wait ! It is what it is, and quality care is worth the time. This is now our closest ER so we will use them in the future if the need arises. Thanks for taking care of Leo, who you said "was an absolute angel today." 😻 (Pic is pre-injury, don't worry, he's resting indoors for now ! Lol)
