How to Save Money at The Paw Patch Place

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I will never take my dogs anywhere else. They make it their mission to make the animals feel safe and comfortable - they keep track of what treats and techniques each animal responds to, and wait to do any exam or shot until the animal is comfortable. My anxious pup actually (almost) likes going to the vet! They gave me more quality time with my old lady when she got sick, and after she died her vet tech wrote us a beautiful note. They really care.

They are SO gentle and kind with Violet (our overly nervous cat). Every time I go in there, not only is it the ideal environment for our cat to feel as calm as possible, but, with the soothing music in each room, it's even relaxing for me as well 😆 Violet struggled with health problems when we first adopted her, and the Paw Patch Place has been with us every step of the way and now she's finally living her best life.

I’m very sad to write this review as we have been going to the paw patch place for the last 3 years but recently had to change. I understand they have had some turnover in staff which has caused them to become very disorganized although there has never been continuity of care there. You always see someone different who never knows your history and you have to repeat it each time. They have not been able to keep proper records and made errors with follow up and prescriptions. The prior vet was lovely but the remaining physician has poor bedside manner in my opinion which made for a more stressful visit. The process of getting our records transferred to a new vet has also been difficult. There have been delays and since their records are still handwritten the new vet was unable to understand much of the information. Prices have also gone way up as well, much more than inflation increases elsewhere. If your pet just has standard care needs for vaccines/check ups I expect you would be ok here while they get back on their feet but if you have a special needs pet like mine I do not recommend paw patch place for continued care.

My Ruthie has been seeing Dr Dowden at Paw Patch Place since I got her! I was nervous (first time dog mom) about Ruthie ending up scared of the vet like so many dogs are, but it has never been an issue! They are great about distracting her during any shots, and I was SOOO much more comfortable having her spay procedure done here than at a low cost clinic knowing she’d receive excellent after care and lots of love from PP’s team. They’ve also been wonderful and patient with me every time I call with questions (which seems to be fairly often 😂). Can’t say enough good things about them!

Approximately Nov. 13, 2022 Thanks for scanning Luna for a microchip! The staff was very understanding and helpful, offering suggestions. And although she didn't have a chip, it's a happy ending!! I was able to take her back home until I gathered more info on her... And guess what? She's been adopted! Yay!! All things are better when your pet is microchipped!! A small expense saves oh-so-important-time these poor bebes don't have. DO YOU WANT YOUR BABY BACK IF IT GETS LOST? GET IT MICROCHIPPED. CHIPS SAVE LIVES.
