How to Save Money at Northside Paws Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so grateful for the Northside Paws team and Dr. Frank. I have taken both of my cats there and each time have been so impressed. I love that they have a room specifically for cats, which my cat had a great time exploring. She is sometimes a little nervous at the vet, but I know having a welcoming space makes all the difference. Dr. Frank and her team are so knowledgeable and caring and I feel so good knowing they are looking after my pets. They do their best to get to patients quickly, diagnose the issue, and come up with a care plan. They are in a great location and have a fun, and clean facility. After my kitten was in the vet ER for the weekend, they continued to check on him through the week and let me know I could bring him in at anytime for further care/monitoring. I appreciate that they are as worried about my cats as I am! I will definitely continue to take my pets there and would highly recommend them to anyone in the area.

A neighbor who is a veterinarian referred us to Northside Paws for a new rescue pup Maggie and I wasn't sure how she would be due to reactivity towards new people. The staff were wonderful with Maggie and Dr Frank was awesome, they spent a lot of time with us and discussed all my concerns about her health and behavior. We were looking for a new vet after our beloved long time veterinarian Dr Murphy retired and moved away from Indy last year. Very happy and impressed with their service and genuine care for our girl Maggie! ❤️🐾

This is arguably the best bet I’ve ever been to. I have moved around a lot in the last six years, so I’ve seen a lot of vets for my 8yo Husky mix, Bolt. I submitted a request for an appointment after I found a bad tooth on Bolt and they were able to get me in the next day! Every member of the staff here is truly amazing; these ladies treat Bolt the way I do, which in turn made him much less anxious here than he normally is in a vet setting. Dr. Frank gave us a very fair and honest estimate after determining that extractions were needed, and got him scheduled for the surgery in the next two and a half weeks. They gave me the preop medications and instructions while I was there to make it easy for me. On surgery day, the drop off process went smoothly. I was so relieved to get the call that he was okay and out of surgery, and I really appreciated Dr. Frank taking the time out of her busy day to call me personally and tell me what was performed. I fully trust that she did whatever was necessary for my baby to be happy and healthy. Our total was thousands less than I was quoted for possible extractions at other vets in the area and I thank the team here for making great care accessible! Our pickup was smooth and the after care instructions were clear; even when I called back because Bolt was crying and disoriented, I was met with kindness in my panic and given advice (that worked!) on how to calm him down and get him to relax and rest. I received a call the following day to make sure everything turned out okay and it has, Bolt is already getting back to himself. I highly recommend Northside Paws to any pet parent that is looking for quality, honest care!

Dr. Frank and her team of Techs are the absolute best! I'm a first time puppy parent and they've been so supportive & compassionate with every challenge, especially during her spay and recovery. We've always been seen quickly and my pup loves to visit her friends now at the vet. Can't recommend more.

Wonderful veterinary clinic. Staff is super friendly & knowledgeable. They have systems in place to make the experience less stressful for dogs (I don't have cats, so I can't speak to their experiences,) if your dog would have any vet-stress. They manage the space, so the dogs generally do not have to come in contact with the other dogs coming into the building. The facility is clean without smelling of harsh chemicals. I cannot rave enough about the way they have the scale camouflaged! No idea why, but scales have generally been the one thing my dogs have not liked at past vets & this was the easiest time I've ever had with getting a weight.
