How to Save Money at IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had a super scary situation with our 8 month old pup. We arrived just a few minutes before midnight on new year. They were exceptional in getting her the care she needed. Great folks there. Kind and caring. Might be a little more than your typical vet bill but it is totally worth it.

There is no better place to take your pet for emergency services than IndyVet! Every person that I interacted with was kind, empathetic, and knowledgeable in their respective areas. Dr. Nina Fischer showed such care and compassion for my fur baby that I knew he was in the best of hands. She kept me informed every step of the way and patiently answered every question that I had. I am so grateful to her and the entire staff - because of this amazing group I still have many more years with my best friend. ❤️

I was in California when my pup's accident happened and even though his chances were slim, IndyVet saved his life. Not only were they amazing in their medical care, but when I got back home, I saw how much each one of them genuinely cared about my boy. Fantastic group that clearly love what they do. I can never thank you all enough. River is completely recovered and back to his old self. He sends his pup love!!

We were referred to IndyVet earlier this week with our very ill Golden Retriever, Sheldon. I'd never been there before. Our doctor was Haley Boswell, and she was so kind and patient with us. Our Sheldon didn't come home with us; we made the hard decision to euthanize, because he would only suffer. These people do the hard work. They have to say the hard things to hear. They have to remain calm when their patient's owners are a mess. They have to be sharp, smart, clear and compassionate. Patient... after patient... after patient, until their shift is over. They have to be strong enough not to take that whole mess of emotions home with them. I don't see how they do that job. But I'm so thankful that they do. They deserve nothing but respect and kindness from anyone who has to make that long trip to where they are. Because they don't get to see the puppies and kittens for their first Vet visit. They have to see them for their last. Be kind to these people if you go, we need them. There are not many people who could do their job with such kindness and intelligence. Not many at all. Thank you so much to Dr. Boswell and the whole amazing bunch of people that do the hard work there. You are so appreciated.

I've had 2 separate pets taken in for different emergencies and the staff has always been up front and kind. 1st time was in June when one of our 10 weeks old pups got stuck or crushed in the recliner. My mother suffers from dementia and didn't realize the pup had entered from the rear of the recliner. Once I was able to free him I was just horrified he wasn't going to make it. We drove up from Morgantown IN. I was concerned about internal organ damage. He did have a chest contusion & went into pulmonary edema. I'm just going to say yes it is expensive for the appropriate care but it is health care. I feel before you step in the door at any emergency vet you should be prepared to pay in upwards of $1500 for just all the initial diagnostics not including treatments. But I am grateful Quinnie now Quigley is just so happy go lucky. Our second trip was in late Sept or early Oct. I went outside to check on pups and found my French Bulldog Clark Griswold breathing about 60 a min. We're not really sure what brought on the brachycephalic Syndrome but once again found ourselves in a critical situation & it was a busy night. NO NEWs IS GOOD NEWs. The staff here has always communicated well & in timely manner. Thank you for all you do!
