How to Save Money at 4 Paws Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Heather and the staff at 4Paws is super compassionate especially when your sweet Pup is at her end of life stage. They were very accommodating to me and my family's needs and managed the situation with care. Dr. Heather explained everything in advance and allowed us to gather together under a tree for the services. The office even stayed later in the afternoon to meet our schedule. Highly recommend. In addition, I found 4Paws to be the most reasonably priced vet office in Central Illinois. The office does not overcharge or price gouge - thank you 4Paws.

I have taken several of my pets to Dr. McTaggart, and she has always gone over and beyond to care for them. They always get me in very quickly especially when any of my pets are having unexpected issues. Most recently, our Great Dane was having breathing issues, and they came in after hours to check on her and do X-rays to find out what the issue was. Because it was a pneumothorax, a very complex issue, and she is such a huge dog, no vets around here could treat her for it, but Dr. McTaggart’s office made numerous calls to U of I vet Clinic so we were able to transfer her there where they had to do a major chest surgery on her to save her life. Dr. McTaggart’s office called me numerous times to check on her the week that she was there. They definitely care so much for their patients. I also take my sweet, old, diabetic cat there for his treatment, and they are wonderful with him. He loves going there and loves all the ladies! We are extremely lucky to have such a caring vet office in Washington!

We have two golden doodles that are a little over one year. We have recently moved back to this area from living in Al. We had an amazing vet in Al. At our first visit with 4 Paws we requested that our pups nails to be trimmed. They “cut” the nails so badly that they bled for awhile after the appt. We decided at that point that the trimming would be done by a professional groomer in the future. Fast forward to today 7/18/23. Our groomer called during our grooming appt for one of our doodles. She informed me that our baby had a large splinter in her hip and that she should be seen right away because it appeared to be infected showing signs of drainage and that she should be seen asap. I called our vet 4 Paws. The receptionist was very short stating that they could not see our baby until Thursday. It’s Tuesday… this is an infection.. I explained this to her. She seemed very dismissive stating that would be the only appt that they could offer. I explained that this is an emergent issue and what could they do for her?? This is their patient?! She said she would talk to the vet and call me back… a few hours later they called me back To tell me that I COULD WASH THE WOUND OUT WITH EPSOM SALTS MYSELF and that the vet would get an antibiotic ready to be picked up..ALSO STATED THAT SHE WOULD NEED TO FOLLOW-UP on the wound.. what?!?! UNBELIEVABLE ! I informed them that I made other arrangements and found a wonderful caring vet that seen her immediately and they can send me all of our records. I should have listened to the bad reviews before going to 4 Paws. It is not what it was years ago. Save yourself the trouble and give your animals better care by going anywhere other than here.
