How to Save Money at The Animal Hospital Of Gurnee, P.C.

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you like being manipulated and lied to, then this is the place for you! I took my dog in for his annual exam on a Friday and was seen by a female Vet. I had no concerns about him when I brought him in. After my dog was examined, she told me how they had taken blood for a more extensive blood test because of his weight loss. I felt manipulated to agree to the test because of the way she framed the conversation to me, including saying that they would have to do further testing depending on the outcome of the test. While outside with a tech who was trying to get a urine sample from my dog, another employee came out and said they needed more blood. She claimed the sample they had taken didn't clot. WHAT?? Off goes my dog to get poked again. Because they were unable to get a urine sample, I was told at the front desk that if I couldn't get a urine sample they could catheterize him for an additional fee. The Vet said she would call me the next day with the results and I left feeling unnerved by the whole process and $647 lighter in the wallet. Fast forward to the next week on Wednesday......I still hadn't heard from them and decided to call. I was told that a different Vet called me. I asked what number did they call me at and they gave me my cellphone number. I checked my call log, voicemail, and even went on-line checking my cell account for incoming calls at 7:30 a.m. and guess what? There were none. WOW, that's just not cool. I will find a different Vet when considering future care for my furry friend. My advice: RUN, don't walk away from this practice.

They made my Jamey feel welcome & excited to receive care. He left happy & healthy! You can tell they truly care about animals & love what they do. The prices were also very reasonable!

I brought both my dogs in for the first time today. The whole team was excellent. My dogs were given a thorough exam and the vet allowed me plenty of time to discuss the concerns I had regarding their health.

Very great vet. My family has been bringing their pets here for 10+ years now. Highly recommend! They also take the voucher you get from the state. The state gives you one voucher. Per year, each voucher allows one pet to be spayed or neutered.

Wow what a great find for us! Better then fox lake or round lake. The dr Hanover was amazing his wife and him really made this place with care in mind for animals my dog has never been more calm while at the vet. Really good prices and the kindest staff I've ever met at a vets office. Fox lake kept losing our records and wait times are crazy. Round lake I called to become a new member there they failed to book my apt. And were very rude for being a new client thay wasnt the best to be treated like that. This place made me feel so relieved and took good care of us we have been searching for this type of place. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to others 100% thank you guys!! They also take unopened dog food for the rescues they work with also loved the convenience of walking straight out to my car from the exam room how efficient! 10/10 truly impressed!
