How to Save Money at Virgil Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Pictures speak 1000 words. I did not go inside because it was such a dump on the outside. I was shocked to find this advertised as a working clinic. I have a rescue dog that was spade there that now has to be spade AGAIN. The procedure was incomplete, and she comes in heat. I would not bring my pet rat there. I highly recommend staying away if you love your pet

Looks are deceiving. While the building itself may not look the most posh, it’s for a very good reason. Doc and Lisa are amazingly kind people who care less about investing their money into aesthetics but more into the actual care of the animals. This means they don’t charge for things you don’t need and the cost is always very fair. We’ve had many many pets throughout the years and many many veterinarians. None have even come close to them. You’ll find them to be very honest, compassionate, thorough, and knowledgeable. Our many pets will always go there since were lucky enough to find them.

Absolutely WONDERFUL vet! The building/office is no-frills but the vet and vet assistant are incredibly down to earth and caring. I have several animals that I have taken there and have never had to wait--we were seen at exactly the appointment time. They have seen my dogs and cat for various things, but also took care of my baby goat on short notice. It's a bit further away from where we live but totally worth the drive.

This is Robert Sam someone forever in debt to Doc and Lisa for all they done for my dog. Let me tell you about real people, real vets and real hearts. My dog Zeus was basically dying and I called at least 25 vets. Not one vet would help me by coming to the home to help us. Zeus is 145 pounds of dead weight and my wife and daughter are disabled. Doc and Lisa waisted no time to drive from their clinic to our home and treat Zeus immediately. They saved his life! You know, I lost all hope and belief in people for many years. I have went through a lot of bad and unfair things by the hands of today so called people. People with no heart, drone like people with no actual care for animals or people. Lisa and Doc are some of the last of an old world humans, they actually care. They don’t care about money, they care about helping. I read a review about how their office was not very nice. Well the person that wrote that is todays people. They don’t look past the first layer and don’t care to take the time to. Doc and Lisa, thank you, I will never ever forget you both. Please never change because the world needs more people like you both badly. Thank you

I am so pleased with the service we received here! Lisa and Doc were incredibly gracious with their time; getting us in last minute for our cat who had never been seen here before. They both clearly care about each and every animal brought to them and it shows. That little bit of extra attention they showed to my cat during our visit made a night and day difference to how I’ve seen her be at other clinics. The pricing is also very reasonable.
