How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat was experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, and my primary vet could not see my pet for a week. BluePearl got me in almost immediately and the staff was very friendly. They laid out several options for my pet’s care in detail, and helped me make the best choice for me. This place is a little pricey but it’s a pet ER so that is expected. I appreciate their honesty during our visit, and I did not feel pressured in taking more expensive routes. My cat has been improving since, and BluePearl let me know further steps to take if his problems persisted. Overall, I left feeling positive about my pet’s recovery and was happy with how treated him.

Severely disappointed with the outcome of coming here. Our cat was suffering severely and we had no idea why. Our local vet told us her symptoms did not sound good and we should take her to the ER right away. Blue pearl was recommended to us and we had gone, it was a very short meeting, and they told us it wasn’t anything serious. An overall 5 minute talk became a 221 dollar consultation we paid. I didn’t think much of it as I thought our cat would get better. However, her condition only continued to worsen and we took her back to Blue Pearl 2 days later. We explained all the possible symptoms to the doctor, who at first seemed very concerned. They said that we might have to take her to the hospital and have her possibly admitted over night. However, soon after, the doctor comes back and says she’s only dehydrated and they will send her back home with us, and we can bring her in to their other hospital at Northfield tomorrow morning because we wanted to get an MRI done, otherwise they said it was nothing serious, and they dismissed us again. That same night, she wasn’t able to breathe properly, and we took her to the only hospital open 24/7, and she unfortunately passed away in the car. The doctors told us she passed away due to heart failure, and not once did the doctors mention this to us even though we gave them all full records of our cat both times. We were dismissed both times and paid lots of money both times in return for nothing. A few days later, they call to talk about a review I left. My mom told them what had happened, and the person on the phone tried to convince us that the doctor had insisted we take our cat to the hospital that same day. Not only did the person on the call lie to us multiple times to save face, they were not properly accepting the doctors mistake. I would not recommend going here.

Dr Durmin took care of our Rottweiler in a mild emergency(vomit and peeing blood). He and his staff were very attentive and helpful my husband said. My husband was very pleased with how great they were with him and how quickly they got to the bottom of things. He can be a handful so we are great FIL for all their help. We definitely are very thankful for them. Hopefully we never have to go here in an emergency again but if we do we will be taking our dog here again.

We brought our chi here during a medical emergency and were treated with respect and compassion. The service was quick. The Dr was experienced and knowledgeable and made concise conclusions while able to fully explain to us our options. We are really grateful to have Blue Pearl so close by!

i brought my cat here because she wasn’t eating or drinking and she wasn’t walking either. they gave her a shot because she was dehydrated and charged hundreds of dollars for it. we had to wait for 2 hours and we were very busy that day and they were just talking around. they do not care for ur animals and they will try to convince you the doctor tried his best when the doctor never saw us. my cat was head pressing which means they’re sick and the nurse noticed and said it but never did anything. she died that exact day. do not go here!!!
