How to Save Money at Touhy Animal Hospital & Grooming

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The office is clean and well organized - check in was efficient and we were seen quickly. Dr. Hautzinger, was excellent in evaluating and treating my newly adopted dog and was patient in answering my questions. The tech was so kind to my nervous pet. Very satisfied and relieved to have this resource so close to home.

Shame on you! This is absolutely the place you read about where not to take your pets! Website/Pet Desk poor management and incorrectly listed pricing. Added charges without telling me first. Vet never examined my pet but visibly looked at my pup and Rushed pup into an eye exam without telling me the charges, prescribed over priced, over the counter topicals and same similar prescription she is currently on, not once did she open her paws up, check into her ears or check the abrasions I pointed out that were bleeding. The front desk was rude, disrespectful and laughed at me when I questioned the charge in regards to not getting the exam results. I have no results but a paid bill. No documentation, nothing on my pet. They charged me for a physical wellness when I clearly spoke to front desk and made appointment as a sickness appointment. I think this place needs to be reported as they have unqualified staff working as vets, poor quality front desk workers and a website that states incorrect pricing. Beware of this business they do not have your pets best interest, all they care about is prescribing meds that you can find over the counter, and money. They don’t even deserve a star!

I do not recommend this veterinarian, he also writes this opinion as a warning. I was with them. The lady told me that I need to do an operation and that there is no other option. The operation costs $5-10,000…. she said that my cat's intestine had entered the intestine ... I went to another vet, it turned out that he has bloating and constipation and that in the worst case, surgery will be needed. But luckily there was no surgery. The vet gave him medicine and the kitty is slowly recovering ❤️❤️ If I could, I would give 0 stars.... If I listened to her, I don't know how it would end

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. All they care about is taking your money. Take your pets elsewhere so they recieve quality care and love they deserve!!! They are all about money and I can not stress this enough. Terrible vets. Terrible office. Not clean. And bad service. And no need to wish me all the best.

I went there with my cat because I suspected she might have an ear infection. It was the only place I found that had an opening the same day. Since I am a new pet owner, I hadn’t found my vet yet then. Doctor Chike Ezeani was very nice, he showed me that my cat’s ears were full of brown discharge. However, he didn’t even use an otoscope to check her ears and didn’t clean her ears! He gave me an antibiotic and a bottle of ear cleaner to clean them at home, which was impossible to do because her ears were very dirty. Today, I went to see a different vet, she said I wouldn’t be able to do it at home, and this is kind of service it was supposed to be done when a cat is diagnosed with an ear infection because without cleaning, applying medication is pointless.
