How to Save Money at Fox Valley Animal Welfare League

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The administrator was very nice and got me checked in quick. My kitty Twinkie was very upset and confused after her spay but the doctor knew exactly how to calm her. They provided pain medicine and post op instructions. Twinkies recovery has been smooth

Affordable prices for my fur babies. More affordable than any veterinary office near me. I made the appointment on my first call, but I was never able to reach them for confirmation, and they didn't call me to confirm the time and date before the procedure. I had the surgery information written down, but it was my first time there, and most places do a confirmation call, so I just hoped it wasn't canceled. I guess if you miss it, then that's on you. I did see something mentioned on their website that they get a lot of no shows, so I would think that might be why. The receptionist there wasn't the friendliest. She was very short in her responses, which came off rude. I didn't say anything because my dogs care was in their hands, but she did apologize and said they were short staffed and that she had another job and was only part-time there, etc etc. The tall male tech or doctor there early that morning said hello, but kept making faces and I could tell he was annoyed that my dog kept barking at him, which was surprising to me considering it's a place that treats animals. He asked if she was always like that and I mentioned that was her first time out seeing people other than my family. He had me hold her so they could give her a shot immediately to relax her and quiet her down and walk her to a kennel, then i left. I went early for pickup before the pickup time, because I live far from here. The receptionist from the morning told me my dog wasn't ready and she told me to come back, but I explained that I'd wait there inside no problem with my computer, because I lived far and was trying to beat traffic so that's why I was there early. I sat there for 5 minutes and then the receptionist told me I could take my dog. A guy walked in and asked to pick up, and she told him no, that he needed to come back I think after 4pm (can't recall exact pickup time) so he went back and sat in his car waiting. Overall, the quality of treatment for my dog was a 10/10. No problems afterwards, and she healed nicely after getting fixed, chipped, and vaccinated. The customer service there I would say 3/10. People are concerned for their animals, which are family, so I would expect better customer service and more compassionate staff. Would I go back, yes, because it's affordable. I just wish they were a little friendlier.

I wish I could give them 10 stars! Great experience from start to finish. I brought Dolly in to be spayed and was greeted by a friendly face immediately. I had printed the surgery form and had it completed prior to my arrival, which I recommend for a quick drop off. I will admit, I was a bit nervous about leaving my sweet Dolly, but I immediately felt at ease when I walked in. Very clean and organized. I arrived 45 minutes early to pick her up post surgery, not knowing if I would have to wait until the specified 4:00 pick up time, but I was allowed to take her right away. Right when I walked in, she knew I was there for Dolly, it was amazing and confirmed that I made the right decision by having her services done here. The post-op instructions were clearly explained and Dolly is doing great! I highly recommend FVAWL!! 10 stars!!
