How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Dr Yates is an excellent doctor. She took care of my guineas. My old one is ten and he had dental work and she did a phenomenal job on him. Highly recommended. Staff friendly and efficient. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Very much worth the 3+ hour drive it took us to get here. This was the only “nearby” vet out of a dozen that was able and willing to handle a semi-emergency we had with our parrot, who had suddenly developed a respiratory infection. They were very professional and reassuring on the phone as we drove to the hospital, and when we finally checked in just before 10pm, they promised a 1-2 hour wait, which ended up being closer to just 1 hour. Our bird was in great hands with Dr. Lopez. If they were closer to us I’d choose them as our regular vet.

Took my rat here when she needed a minor tail amputation. It went great and I'm so grateful for this office. Took her to a different emergency vet when the accident happened and that vet did not have experience doing the surgery she needed. The next morning I called almost every exotic vet in the state. No one had same day availability for both the exam and the surgery. Some places said 3 weeks out, some said we don't do that . I couldn't bear to make my rat spend another night hurt, let alone any longer than that. Midwest was able to schedule us for an exam the same day and completed the surgery within 2 hours of her being there. They were so nice as to squeeze us in between other appointments because the needed surgery was minor and quick. They were super understanding of our urgency and took very good care of our baby girl. Exam, surgery, anesthesia, and meds all came out around $300. Great price, much lower than I was expecting. Recheck ($45) in a week and suture removal (no charge) a week after that. A note for rat owners: I hate seeing my girls after full anesthesia, it has always been hard for them to recover. At this vet, they only had her under for a couple of minutes and she was acting normal by the time I picked her up (30 min after surgery).
