How to Save Money at Cortland Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I called Cortland Animal hospital for an emergency appointment for my puppy because her vet could not see her right away. The staff was so friendly and helpful and got us in the same day. Dr. Nick was very informative about my puppy's care. If it weren't for the distance, I would be making this Vet our primary. Highly recommend Cortland Animal Hospital.

Staff can't remember that we have canceled our appointments calls and texts and we no longer want to bring our animals due to the fear that days later we may be charged more money if they "FORGET TO CHARGE YOU" I didn't know I could call my customers days later and be like ooo by the way you owe me more money because I forgot to charge you but we did end up paying the money they asked for and then told them to cancel all appoints . If I can't trust you to keep appointment times or have doctors there when u say or at bare minimum charge me 1 time then I can't trust you to perform surgery on my dogs and for that 51 dollars I will be taking my animals elsewhere. Now please stop calling and texting our phones

Well i brought my 15 months old dog in for her updated shots, etc, from a puppy, they said we need to take her in the back room its easier for them. Well first I've never had a vet clinic take my dog away from me ever for routine work and i'm 63 yrs old and had dogs all my life. Well she freaked out and they continued to keep going and tell me later what happened. Why oh why didnt they stop come and get me first. She didnt know what was going on and i was not there her support person. My dog from getting her at 6 weeks was socialized a lot, I've worked with her with many classes , we traveled every where with her , she loves our grandchildren, she went where ever we went. So now i will continue to desensitize her on this terrible experience and go somewhere else where they have a Fear Free Clinic , that the whole clinic is trained and show more compassion and work with there clients.

Cortland Animal Hospital has recently lost a significant amount of their staff and this has impacted their ability to care for their patients. I am editing my original review to show how much respect we had for Cortland in the past compared to now. They have been unable to provide services for months. Whenever I have called for an appointment they have said "we will have to call you back". They do not call back, I have had to call back weekly to receive the same response of "we will call you back". I personally do not believe that I should have to harass my vet to get an appointment. Aside from routine vet appointments, one of my pups has been sick for over two months. Cortland would not see her in person, they continued to test her fecal multiple times even after her fecal came back clear each time. I let them know she was losing weight and they still would not see her and instead had her switch food which was $70 for a 16 pound bag and said she needed to be on that for a month before running more test or seeing her in person. After taking her to another vet (who saw her a day after calling), we found out she has lost 16 pounds in 2 months including muscle loss. It is beyond unacceptable that my concerns were not taken seriously. Aside from for their inability to see my sick dog, they are also unable to provide annual services. Despite calling over a month in advance they respond with "we will have to call you back for an appointment". They insist they will call back by the end of the week. It's been over 3 weeks and they have not called back. Those who answer the phone are either rude or incompetent as they never seem to know what is going on. I truly hope that Cortland is able to hire adequate staff and be upfront with their patients if they are not able to provide services and refer their patients out to get the care they need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is by far one of the best Vets in the area. We have seen Dr. Askew, Dr. Ames, & Dr. Otto. Every single of them have been knowledgeable, honest, and upfront. They are always upfront about the cost of services, and do not seem to attempt to get you to pay for something your pupper does not need. They genuinely care about the animals in their care. They have been flexible when I needed an appointment ASAP. They have provided care for my dog & her puppies. They made sure as a breeder I had the access to services I needed. They have also been upfront when an emergency has occured and they need to move my appointment so I am not sitting there for hours. They are also super nice when I call with a million questions and have never made me feel stupid or like I was bothering them with my calls (even if I was haha). They go above and beyond when I have been there, including helping me to bring in my 11 puppies at a time. Or having me pay in the appointment room if there is a puppy in the lobby who may not be friendly with other dogs. They are always professional & respectful and put the needs of your animals 1st. They know how to prioritize their clients in a way that is not disrespectful towards other clients. Unfortunately, I have been there twice now when they have needed to euthanize an animal. They put a sign up with a fake candle and seem to provide all the care they can to both the animal and owner in their time of need. I honestly can not say enough good things about this Animal Hospital. I will continue to recommend them to anyone & everyone I know. This is not the kind of vet that will stress you or your pet out when you have to go see. Highlights: -Affordable pricing, upfront about pricing. -Friendly Vets, Vet Techs, Animal Care Assistants, Techs, Receptionists, & Cats :) -Knowledgeable -Flexible -Compassionate -Respectful -Honest -Genuinely care about your pets. Penelope & her 11 puppies love them & appreciate them.

I love this vet. They try their best to help you get your pet the help they need within your budget. All of the ladies here are very polite and always ask about my catman by name when I come in to pick his food up. I had to put a cat down here a few years ago and they were really gentle and kind to me thru a very difficult process. I wouldn't bring my meows anywhere else.
