How to Save Money at West Loop Veterinary Care Streeterville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet has been the best for our golden retriever. They clearly care so much about giving him good care and making him enjoy his visits. We recently got a dental exam/cleaning bc his breath was getting bad, and it was such a smooth experience and such a big improvement. Everyone took the time to explain the procedure and aftercare instructions. Would highly recommend!

The place is clean and the vet and technicians are caring and handle your pet well. They also do a great job managing emergencies and follow-through on your pet's condition, very caring. My cat has anxiety and I've always felt comfortable taking him here. My only disappointment is that the medications are almost twice the price for everything. A box of Nutramax Proviable which is available for $25 bucks at the Petco in River North was $60 at this vet. Same with the vaccines. More than twice the price at this vet. Good service but I would go elsewhere to pick up vaccines and medications. I mentioned this to them and they said it was the location (Streeterville). Petco in River North, which is the right next door, has the exact same meds for half the price.

It’s been a year now, but I think it’s worth it to let potential new customers know how much this veterinary clinic is knowledgeable and cares for your pets. Quick summary: - at the end of December 2024 our cat’s toe got swollen; - at the end of January 2025 he had x-ray (for no reasons, it turned out), fine needle aspiration, and skin biopsy for an overall cost of over $3000; - the biopsy result was like “it could be anything, maybe sarcoma or an anti-inflammatory disease”. Good job indeed; - we were given the option to amputate either one or two fingers, with the latter being around $5000. Now, we are not veterinarians or doctors but we tend to follow logic reasoning, so what’s the point of amputating a random number of fingers? If it’s cancer, then it has to go away entirely (or you may decide to do nothing, but not something in between). If it’s not cancer, or if there are metastases, you don’t amputate at all; - in April we decided to take the cat to Italy for better (and also cheaper, flight included) treatment. They just removed the swollen part of the toe, that the biopsy revealed to be in fact sarcoma but confined there, so no further treatment or surgery was necessary. Nine months later our cat is doing great. The cherry on top is that this clinic even asked us to pay another hundreds of dollars for some paperwork to travel to Italy that was not required, since our cat has the European passport (an information that they had on file). Thankfully, we found another veterinary clinic that was honest and competent enough to tell us that a simple health certificate would have done the job. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Edit: it has been a month and I have not heard from Matt or anyone else from the clinic. Pretty much in line with the level of care received last year. Beware of this place.

We love coming to this vet. The practitioners are caring with the animals and offer lots of advice for behavioral issues as well as a thorough explanation of medical procedures and their benefit. We got a detailed email with suggestions for our cats urinary problem. It’s very clean, very little wait time and they’re direct about the pricing. Monti came out happy and we came out relieved to know he does not have any serious medical condition. Thank you Dr. Esser!

The best vet experience I’ve had! Autumn got me in immediately when I thought my cat may have an eye infection which I really appreciated. She also let me swing in and use a box carrier as I wasn’t prepared which also really helped lower my overall stress. I think my cat would attest that the doctor and assistant treated him like a king while he was there and he left with a new toy that he’s currently going crazy on. Each person was so kind and calming. Overall a great experience- thank you!
