How to Save Money at Scout Veterinary Urgent Care - West Loop

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dogs primary vet recommended Scout, as they could not fit us in when our golden, Mabel, was sick, Very professional and took great care of our her. It was easy to get an appointment and they saw us immediately when we arrived. They walked us through what they wanted to do and why, which made us comfortable. Would absolutely bring either of our dogs here again.

I am so grateful for Scout! My cat Moonshine was spayed at another clinic on Wednesday and over the holiday weekend started to display signs of infection. It was Sunday and I was scrambling trying to get her seen as soon as possible, wanted to avoid the emergency room and was worried I would have to wait until Tuesday and it could worsen. I actually called the Lincoln Park location and they were able to schedule me SAME DAY at this location about 2 hours after my call. From the front desk to the exam room it was a very relaxing environment, which both Moonshine and I appreciated after the stressful situation. Very clean as well. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Crystal and Dr. Rivera for a thorough visit. Moonshine got her incision cleaned, put on antibiotics, and they swabbed the bacteria to test in case the infection was more severe. They were thoughtful enough inform me it would be cheaper to bring it into the clinic she was seen at originally for testing as they knew cost was a concern! I am a new pet owner, but I don't think many vets offer to do that. They are about quality over quantity care. I am happy I took Moonshine to Scout and she seems to be on the mends. They even gave a little treat and a toy that she will be happy to play with once she is good to be more active. Thank you again Scout staff for what you do!

I brought in my dog Minnie who was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Minnie was vomiting and our primary vet was just about to close, so Scout was recommended. We were able to be seen within a few hours that same day. The staff was so friendly and Minnie was well taken care of! I had to bring her back in a few days later and they made the process so easy! She is recovering well and I’m so thankful I brought her to Scout! Both Dr. Rivera and Dr. Monick are wonderful! I wouldn’t hesitate to bring her back!

This veterinary urgent care was a lovely experience from start to finish. As soon as you enter, the place looks very welcoming with decorative plants, benches for sitting, and a person at the front desk. There were also books to read, and my partner and I took a look at some of them because they were too funny! An added bonus is that, at least when I went, the urgent care lacked any sort of strong scent, so you already feel more comfortable with the cleanliness of the clinic. Both the technician and doctor held my 3 month old kitties with concern and care, and I couldn’t appreciate this team more. Thank you SCOUT! I will definitely be returning.

Our primary veterinarian recommended Scout Urgent Care to us when they didn't have any openings for a same-day appointment. Our cat was not doing well and really had us worried. We were relieved that Scout was able to see us that afternoon. Everyone was very nice. The process was easy. The facilities were clean and we appreciated being able to park in their parking lot. Most importantly, the veterinarian was able to get us some medicine for our cat which led to a speedy recovery and allowed us to breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to everyone at Scout for helping our little buddy!
