How to Save Money at McKillip Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great hospital and very easy to be seen. I’ve been here a handful amount of times with no appointments needed. I usually see the guy doctor. This time I seen Dr. Hopkins , she was such a breath of fresh air. She & the technician explained to me things very thoroughly and easy to understand,. I really like that she goes over an estimated cost of the treatment plan before getting started. The only negative thing I will say is that every single time I’ve been there , there’s always lady with short blondish/greyish hair talking really out loud with no decorum. It’s really uncomfortable having to hear her curse out of no where or grunting. Prices are a bit high as well, but i guess it due to the location. Other than that the rest of the staff is really nice and positive. I do recommend this place!

In full transparency, I had never met Dr. Hopkins before and was a little hesitant based on some of the reviews I’d read. But I had a really positive experience with her. My dog was having loose stool—thankfully nothing serious—and they recommended a stool panel and some medication. Dr. Hopkins was easy to talk to and very understanding, especially when I mentioned I wanted to be conservative with treatment for financial reasons. She clearly has a lot of experience and offered plenty of helpful tips and advice, which I really appreciated. I’d have no problem seeing her again. Yes, the clinic does have longer wait times—I went on a Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and waited a little over an hour—but the ability to walk in without an appointment is a big plus. The front desk staff are kind, and when I declined the optional probiotics and IV fluids, the vet tech removed them with no pushback at all. Also, McKillips had the best pricing of any place I called. The office visit was $84, the fecal test was $78, and the antibiotics were $25.70—way more reasonable than other quotes I received. I also got texts the results the next morning. We’ve been bringing our pet here for about three years now and will definitely continue to be clients

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! THEY DO NOT CARE! I had a very positive experience here in 2019, with a completely different doctor. Dr. Hopkins and the team "cleaned" up my cats tumor area, and they did it so roughly that within 24 hours it began bleeding everywhere- and I had to bring her in to be put to sleep a week later. I don't think she would have suffered had they not rough housed her in the process of "cleaning" the wound and shaving an entire sensitive area and opening it up to infection. NOT ONLY THAT, but after she put her to sleep, I asked for the pawprints and she said "Oh don't worry about it, we'll mail everything to you." I just called after 3 weeks of checking my mail, and they said sorry, we don't have the pawprints, and they asked if I received a card, and I said no, and they said, "Oh, it must have gotten lost in the mail." Nothing has gotten lost in the mail for me ever, so it was a way to cover up their incompetence... So, if you care about your pets comfort and well-being and having an office that follows through with what they say they are going to do in an EXTREMELY sensitive time....I would not go here again, and will take my other cat elsewhere.

Ended up having a catheter put on my cat, because he had bladder stones, and immediately drove to the emergency vet to have it removed. Emergency vet said this never should have happened. Wasted $1400. I was pressured into this and didn’t know what was going on. Unprofessional care. My cat also needed immediate surgery for the stones, which they neglected to tell me how fatal and timely this was — instead their solution was something no other vet would have done.
