How to Save Money at BLVD Vet Lakeview Lincoln Park

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been bringing my cats to BLVD Vet for about a year and highly recommend them. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, especially with cats, and always listens with empathy. My cats have seen Dr. Bean and Dr. Grant, and both have been wonderful, kind, and great with my cats. When one of my cats needed emergency care for a cruciate ligament injury at MedVet (which BLVD Vet recommends), they made it easy to share records and continue his care. One of my cats, Arthur, especially loves the staff. He loves going to the vet (he’s the one happily sitting on the vet table with toys). Also special shout out to the folks who always are so responsive via text! Y’all rock.

I cannot say enough great things about the entire team here, and particularly Dr. Bean. I first brought my 14 year old cat Mittens to BLVD with what I thought was dental issues hindering her appetite, but it turned out to be end-stage CKD. Although the diagnosis was incredibly heartbreaking, I couldn’t think of a better team to help guide us through end of life care. They were incredibly patient and kind when I cried my eyes out over the phone, and when I would bring Mittens in and she would be a little feisty. The wonderful techs here at BLVD taught me how to administer SubQ fluids at home - which Mittens grew to love and actually look forward to - and they were so gentle with her in the treatment room. Dr. Bean would explain everything going on with Mittens in a way I could understand, and was incredibly knowledgeable. It’s been a month since Mittens crossed the rainbow bridge, and while I’m certainly not getting another cat anytime soon, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that if I do I will be coming right back here. Thank you for everything this team has done for Mitties.

I absolutely love this place! My dog was having issues with his back or joints, and I couldn’t figure out exactly what was wrong. He was in pain, so I called in, and they were able to fit me in within a two-hour window. The staff was professional, and the clinic was super clean. They provided top-notch care without pushing unnecessary treatments. The vet prescribed medication that helped my dog heal without the need for any surgery. Now, just two days later, my dog is already recovering well. I’m so thankful for their quick action and excellent service!

We just had our first visit with our 10-year-old cat, and we are blown away by the warmth and professionalism displayed here. Our financial situation isn't great, so we were hesitant but he needed care. They were so understanding, and went our of their way to work with us on what we could afford, while letting us know what they'd like to do for him if and when we can afford it. The doctor we saw was someone who fills in there on days off, and I have to say she was among the best vets I've dealt with for many years. Kind, patient, and sent us home with a bill we could manage and a game plan to try as a first line of defense. Everything was outlined with full transparency and details, allowing us to make the best choices we could today, without the sudden shock of an overwhelming bill. We felt heard, supported and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a caring and professional team. Everyone from the person who answered my initial phone call (Brooke) to the vet (Dr. Smetana) and assistant in the room (so sorry, I didn't get her name!) were all wonderful. They even sent us home with a sample of one of the treatments, to help keep our cost down. That's a rare level of compassion, and it's so deeply appreciated. Their primary focus has been on helping our little Magic cat, all the way. This place is a gem, and we will be back. Thank you, BLVD Lakeview staff! You made this beleaguered cat mama and papa so happy.
