How to Save Money at Harvester Veterinary Hospital of Burr Ridge

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me tell you about my furry boy, Legend, and his recent allergy woes. Our poor boy was really struggling and our usual clinic couldn't fit us in for an appointment anytime soon. So, I decided to take a chance on Harvester Veterinary Hospital and I am glad I did! First off, their online booking system was a breeze. I was able to snag a same day appointment and fill out all the necessary forms online. No fuss, no muss. When we arrived, the front desk staff was super friendly and the facility was spotless. They also accept Care Credit which was super helpful for us. Once we got into the exam room. The vet tech was an absolute gem, taking the time to get to know Legend and make him feel at ease. When Dr. Kanak walked in, it was like a ray of sunshine had entered the room. She immediately got down on the ground to greet Legend to make him feel safe, while she checked him. The whole team was incredibly patient and thorough, answering all of our questions and never making us feel rushed. They even followed up the next day to check on Legend's progress. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Kanak and the staff at Harvester Hospital. They truly care about their patients and it shows. Legend is feeling so much better now, thanks to their expert care.

Dr. Niemiec was so kind and gentle with our Casey. I felt confident in his recommendation not to have Casey’s teeth cleaned yet and not to have Casey’s little warts surgically removed as it was not necessary to do anything that would cause him undue pain. I felt the treatment was in the best interest of Casey’s well being rather than for the vet to profit. He also provided me with information to find flea/tick medication at a reasonable cost. All very impressive and caring. I’ve already recommended to friends and family (even strangers!) Harvester Veterinary.

My dog hurt her eye and our vet was not available. It was a last-minute appointment, and I was fortunate to book it with Harvester. Their website is easy to use. the office is very well organized, and everyone is super nice. Dr. Kelley Kanak is knowledgeable and explains the conditions and treatment very well. Highly recommend this vet hospital.

My dog Delta has been so much better off since she began coming to Harvester Veterinary Hospital. Everyone there is so kind and accommodating. Everyone truly knows their stuff. I'm beyond grateful! Thank you for accepting Delta and working with her (us) even though she comes off intimidating and aggressive.. She's truly the biggest baby EVER. I'll continue driving almost an hour for this level of care. I highly recommend this place. They make you feel like family.

If you have pets, you know at some point you're going to have to say goodbye . I had to have my 15 year old adult kitten laid to rest due to an infection on her stomach. The staff there were so compassionate and caring. Our pets become part of our family, and they seem to understand that. After the whole ordeal and I left, I honestly thought that was it. Well, to my surprise, I received a card signed from the entire office saying sorry for my loss.. This was amazing... All I can say is they're amazing and will happily go out of my way to take any of my animals there for care.
