How to Save Money at Hoof & Paw Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Tim and the staff at Hoof and Paw are top notch. They treat your pet as if it was their own. They are caring and the customer service is nothing but GREAT ! I wouldn’t look anywhere else but Hoof and paw to bring my family pet and get the medical care they deserve.

I had a non-life-threatening emergency and was given a same-day spot through a cancellation. I DID tell the office that I was a new patient, but when I got there I was told that they wouldn't see my cat because they "weren't accepting any new patients." They didn't mention this when I made the appointment, nor did they mention it during the second call when they gave me the cancelled spot. They ALSO didn't check their OWN files to see that no, I didn't have any account with them. I had to stress out a cat who was already in physical discomfort because they "don't take sick animals." She wasn't sick, she had her shots. They were just sticking to a stupid rule that they wouldn't even consider possibly breaking--even though the appointment time was free. Because I was a new patient. I won't return. You only get once chance to make a first impression.

If your vet appointment or walk-in is with the older lady, or really anybody there be weary. They won’t thoroughly do their job for whichever reason I don’t know why. My dog was misdiagnosed due to a one of the long working employees negligence toward the situation, and towards my now lost beloved dog. They do great for picking up meds for animals, but I’ve heard so many bad stories from others. Even stories of accidental euthanasia due to once again, negligence and lack of attention towards their work. Now I got to experience it first hand and let me tell you it was the start to a spiraling of appointments, worries, and annoyance because we knew more was wrong with our girl. We switched vets and decided we wouldn’t be going back there unless we needed to get meds. When calling H&P back to let them know we wouldn’t be back it was rough. Not only was it difficult for us to give them the news of a new, much worse diagnosis than H&P gave us. It was hard for the lady speaking to us on the phone to hear about it, to hear that our dog is now diagnosed with something that will kill her. The lady on the phone at H&P was very upset, almost and maybe to the point of tears. She even mentions that it’s not the first time these issues have been seen, and it’s also not the first time they’ve been held semi-accountable. It’s terrible, and I know it happens other places as well, less frequently. However, this place though has had me heard, and feel enough that I can’t not publicize my personal experience. You have a few good apples here, spit the rest out. Don’t be like Eve. The opinions and help here come from a caring occupation, but not a caring mind.

Hoof and Paw is a fantastic animal clinic I have been to for 13 years. They have seen my dog since he was 3 weeks old to 13 years old and have never disappointed. Both the doctors have a way of knowing immediately what's wrong and can always fit us in their schedule quickly. I would say everyone should try this clinic.
