How to Save Money at Alton Animal Clinic, Formerly Formea Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I'm updating my review to 4.8 stars. Yesterday I received a call from the manager (Sara) at Alton Animal Clinic about my concerns. She explained why they were short staffed. She addressed each of my concerns. She also gave me options for using Heart Guard Plus instead of the preventative I purchased yesterday. I am impressed that she care enough to call me on the same day as our visit. I exchanged that preventative and ordered the Heart Guard Plus from their online pharmacy. Hopefully in the future they will explain the different options that are available before just giving a more expensive one. I always want to use the less amount of drugs our Roscoe takes. Had a 9:00 appointment. Didn't go back into one of the rooms till around 9:15 and I didn't see any other animals in the waiting area. They have always been very busy in the past. At 9:25 I was just about to walk out when the vet came into the room. I don't mind waiting when they are extremely busy, but that wasn't the case this morning. The Vet (she was a substitute) and Tech did a great job giving our Roscoe his exam, shots and trimming his nails. The appointment itself only took about 10 minutes. When I go to pay the bill it's a little over $700. $500 of that is the preventive pills. (Now the total is around $300 including around $102 for the heart guard plus with the exchange.) His nail trimming went for $15 to $28. I didn't realize the last time I had his nails trimmed it cost $25. They have regained a loyal customer after my experience this morning.

I had an amazing experience at this vet office! From the moment I walked in, the staff were welcoming, kind, and genuinely cared about my pet. The receptionists were friendly and efficient, and the technician made sure my pet felt comfortable the entire time. The veterinarian took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all my questions, and treated my pet with so much compassion. You can tell everyone here truly loves animals and takes pride in what they do. I left feeling confident and grateful knowing my pet was in great hands. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for excellent care and a friendly, professional team!

Alton Animal Clinic is the best vet I’ve had. They are comprehensive and thorough. They are polite, upfront and honest, which I appreciate. Some people may take their honesty as being rude, but when it comes down to it, I don’t want to be mislead or uninformed in any situation. My trust in them and their honesty with me is imperative. Anyone who has seen Dr Formea knows he was just as honest and upfront. It is no different now than it was with him. Dr K (Kraushaar) has been amazing. I am going through end of life with one of my dogs, and she has been there every step of the way. I appreciate you very much, Dr K. The employees of AAC pride themselves in care and compassion for your pets as well as their parents. I can’t rave about them enough. Please know your hard work and dedication to our animals veterinary needs are looked upon with admiration and you all are very much appreciated!

Have been a client for over a decade. We have always received excellent care over the years. We always feel respected and given the time to answer all our questions and get instructions explained to us in as much detail as needed. We are recognized and greeted by our names when we walk in the door. I want to give a shout out to our favorite vet tech Wil Diaz whom has been with us our entire time there as clients. He had a special calming nature over all our dogs and our other animals he has cared for. He has taken on burden of the hard emotional act of putting several of our animals to sleep when it was time compassionately. He is the best and our dogs love him. Legacy staff members like Wil have keep us comming back through all the major changes there over the years. We need some familiar faces.
