How to Save Money at VCA Kootenai Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When my Golden Retriever, Maxey Poo, was sick a couple years ago, they got him in right way. He had a bleeding mass on his spleen, and either needed an emergency surgery or to be euthanized. They did surgery right away. They took out his spleen, and recovered him over night at a neighboring hospital. Here he is 2 years later, at the young age of 15 years old! Still thriving! He's my best friend, and I'm so very grateful for these extra years I've had with him because of the care he received at VCA! I can't be more grateful.

I have been seeing a lot of people put one star review for the pricing of VCA Kootenai hospital. Although this place is a little pricey, I believe it is so worth the extra cost. These people truly care about the animals they see. I bring both of my Shepherds here for preventive care and emergency visits. My older Shepherd mix is an angel at the vet, and is adored by this facility. They take such great care of her. My young Dutch Shepherd has a lot of fear reactivity issues and taking her to the vet is no small feat. The vet office was super flexible with me when I brought her in. We attempted to see if we could do her appointment without sedation, and then they worked with me to bring her in a couple hour later after we decided that for a positive experience at the vet she would need sedation. When we realized she would need an stronger dosage, they worked with me to schedule her in the next day. The entire time the staff were concern about making this experience as stress-free as a possible. I greatly appreciate when vets put the animal first before the business. They did not charge me for the two previous failed appointments and were so encouraging. It can be extremely hard on owners who work really hard to train and to be responsible with their reactive animals. I so appreciate the people in this vet office. NEVER lose this aspect of your business.

We have had both our puppies at Vca and couldn’t be happier! They take amazing care of the fur babies that come in and do an excellent job explaining things in detail and do a great job for a great price. As young pet owners , they have a great payment plan for our pups that is so affordable. Every veterinarian we’ve ever experienced there is hands down amazing.

Pros. Very very sweet Dr. Ramirez she would have treated my dog for kennel cough but gave me the option because of pricing to get x-rays which I said yes to and I also asked for sedation which he needed and she did inform me of the extra charge. She let us know the prices before we agreed. We have been going here and not changed because that's were the shelter recommended around me. I LOVE that they have a side door for animal aggressive dogs. I love the way they treated my sweet Bark Ruffalo. After the x-rays came back and we did extra blood work we were informed he had cancer. In two places. So it really is up to the human to decide how much they want to spend and how far they want to go. The only reason I'm taking away two stars is because this is by far the most expensive vet in post falls, CDA and Spokane valley. Pricing would not have changed the outcome but if we had chose to make my dog fight the cancer it would be impossible at these prices.
