How to Save Money at PetMed of Key West Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Our family has been using PetMed since moving to the Dubuque area a few years ago. We LOVE all of the veterinarians, techs, & staff- but must give a special shout out to Molly who always goes above and beyond with our fur babies. Working in vet med takes a very special type of passion (and strength), and the empathy and caring we receive from the staff at PetMed is unmatched. Thanks for all you do to help keep our pets happy and healthy.

We’ve been taking our animals to PetMed of Key West for over 4 years. They have been exactly what our almost 10 year old German Shepherd, Louie, needed. Louie doesn’t trust many people and can be a handful at times. Despite this, Dr. Hellert and her staff have helped him overcome all of his medical challenges. Everyone here is extremely mindful and has handled him with extra patience and grace. 10/10 would recommend you bring your animals to PetMed of Key West.

While every single vet there is over the top friendly, courteous, skilled, knowledgeable, kind, easy to talk to, the same ABSOLUTELY can not B said for their receptionists. They rarely smile, they look and act grumpy, they are curt and short, not at all welcoming. There's one lady there that in person and to your face use HON, DEAR, SWEETIE when talking to U. O have absolutely no idea how she addresses me, but in my opinion, it's degrading, disrespectful, and unless she calls men by those same titles, it's highly discriminatory and sexist. Then there's another one, an older lady with light brown hair, that I got in to a tussle with over the phone regarding our 3 animals files, copies of rabies and immunizations. She was just as pissy and inconsiderate to me as I was 2 her. Yet, when my husband went in 2 pu what we needed, she was EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL to my husband. She was short, curt, unfriendly and had the audacity to ask him about me and make a disparaging remark about me to him. She asked him just what MY problem was and why was I so grouchy. And that I needed something to help me with my problems. So, my husband came home and asked me about her, bc he had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what was going on! So I told him. And our son even backed me up bc I had the conversation on speaker phone. We went in yesterday for our cat's allergy problems and her rabies shot. Again, the vet and her service was absolutely beyond reproach and top shelf!! Then we went 2 pay the bill. I will say that their $$$ R a bit steep. The last time we went in there, we talked about getting our 2 dog's teeth cleaned. They gave us sn estimate. It would B around $1100 per dog!! I called around and I got other estimates. They were between $500-$850/dog. So, yeah, a bit pricey. But anyway, the one receptionist was on the phone and peppering the conversation with dear and Hon. The other one that waited on us...no hello, no goodbye, no thank you. All very prim, proper, short, perfunctory and COLD. I inquired as 2 the availability of any dog or cat samples of treats or foods for our 2 cats and 2 dogs plus our 4 stray cats that we feed. She didn't even look up to scan the shelves or make eye contact. She just said NO. That was a little hard 2 believe as literally every time we have been in there, there's been samples. And I know that pretty much every rep that comes thru there on a regular basis leaves an abundance of samples and also will send the vets samples. All it takes is a note from the vet or sometimes it's just done and set up 2 automatically send out the samples. Plus, yesterday it actually STUNK in their office. A LOT! Like urine. Was really strong. First time we've ever been there that it was that nasty and potent of a smell. So, I'd definitely the vets a 5 star rating, but their receptionists regrettably brought the rating drastically down.
