How to Save Money at Kilani Pet Clinic Inc

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our special needs cat Jennifer angel belle needed emergency treatment yesterday. Dr Carol and her ENTIRE STAFF have always been our Jenny Belles' medical team. They took her in right away when they opened and helped her with her impacted belly. Jenny Belle was very happy&felt so good last night she meowed&squacked at me wanting a second dinner! Dr Carol&staff always treat Jenny belle so well ! I highly recommend Kilani Pet Clinic!

My dog had breathing problems. I was so worried that the bill would be more than I could afford. I am grateful that they focused only on what is needed at the moment for the problem. They treated my furbaby well. He is usually shy but he didn't mind be treated here. We like it here!

I’ve visited this place in the past for my dog’s eye pressure checks and once when she injured her dew claw. All of those experiences were wonderful, but things have clearly changed since 2015. Fast forward to 2020, after a move back to the island in 2019, my dogs were due for their one year checkup. I immediately remembered how great our experience was here, so I called and I asked how much the appointment would run (so I could change vets if too expensive) and was told $105 each dog. So, I scheduled an appointment. Imagine my shock at the end of the appointment when my total was $302. No added services, just an exam fee, a fecal exam fee and Heartworm test for two dogs. That’s pretty pricey and definitely not what I was quoted over the phone! I was told everything went ”fine” during my two dogs’ appointment, but supposedly my Boston terrier bit one of the techs, which he has never done before, so that sort of disturbed me. What happened In there that he turned aggressive? Fast forward two days later and I get a call from someone at the office saying my dogs were positive for a parasite they found in their fecal. Why did I get a phone call two days later? It doesn’t take two days to run a fecal. I asked a lot of questions and the gal on the phone was really nice, but she didn’t know the answers to a lot of my questions. Just a lot of repeating and unclear answers. By the end of our conversation I was more confused, do you get the parasite from water or soil? Both? She wanted me to come in and get the dogs some medication the following day (they called me after they were closed). So, it’s been two days and now it can wait another day? Furthermore, she said I’d just administer these pills and we would be done. No follow up appointment to make sure they are clear of the parasite? According to my research, this medication has a ~65% efficiency rate. That means, there is a possibility it doesn’t work for one or both of my dogs. How would I know if we don’t do a follow up? Doesn’t seem right to just throw medicine at someone. My dogs have no symptoms of this parasite & I am not one to give my dogs medications they don’t need. With the two day lapse and the lack of information I’m getting from this place, I feel like the best thing to do is to get a second opinion from another vet and just eat my $300 bill at this place. Disappointing for sure. I won’t be returning.

Quick to respond, nice people, but they are overpriced for the services they provide. My dog got two shots and a health certificate and it was 200 bucks. They saw my dog for all of five minutes. Not impressed but it helped me out so I can’t complain too much.

Kilani Pet Clinic located right across the street from the Wahiawa Hospital parking lot on Kilani Avenue has been our family vet clinic for years. Dr. Carol Fujioka has cared for many of our dogs over the years. She believes in keeping her patients alive and healthy and free of pain for as long as their quality of life is still good and they are not suffering. She doesn't put dogs down just because an owner doesn't want their pet any longer. When my Mom had to put her two dogs down Dr. Fujioka came to our home where our dogs felt safe and comfortable. She allowed us to take our time with them and to say goodbye to our beloved family members. Dogs are indeed family and Dr. Fujioka understands that. She is very patient with our new puppy and her assistants are so loving and sweet when it comes to cuddling her and helping her not to be afraid. When every visit to the vet results in shots you can't blame a puppy for trembling with fear. But Dr. Carol and her staff do whatever they can to provide quality and speedy care without making us feel like we are being rushed out the door. When we need flea or heart worm medication they allow us to order it online without putting up a fuss like some other vet offices my sister has utilized in the past. We don't get any attitude from Heather or any of Dr. Fujioka's staff when it comes to that. We will continue to let Kilani Pet Clinic care for our family dogs as long as Dr. Fujioka remains open for business.
