How to Save Money at Westside Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After going to this vet for years ( I was not a new customer) I called them because it was time for my older cat to be put down, and I wanted to make the final arrangements. The girl who answered the phone had a nasty attitutude and wasn't willing to talk to me about getting a sedative for my cat before I brought her in to be put down. "She hasn't been here in a long time, we can't do that." We were there 4 months before that, 4 months! I told her my cat is dying, she literally acted like she did not care. I called another vet after that and they were SO HELPFUL with putting my beautiful cat to sleep. It's a blessing that this vet's staff was so rude to me, because the other vet went above and beyond to make a painful situation easier. They do NOT love animals, they love collecting your money, that's it.

Dr. Andy Lee showed phenomenal care for my pet Bandit. He provide the service we needed and it was at a very reasonable price. Their front desk service, Mrs. Amy, was extremely friendly and understanding of the situation. She allowed us to come in short noticed and also showed great care for Bandit. I hold nothing but gratitude for them both and the clinic. Your service today earned the business a forever customer. Thank you all for caring for our pets as much as we do!

Westside actually diagnosed our puppy after another local vet shrugged off his skin condition as mange. It was too late to do anything and gently took care of him. Instead of sticking us with a hefty bill, they worked with us, and helped us. I really appreciate them helping us out, especially when our boy was suffering.

The staff is super kind and helpful! The always take great care of my dog and let me know what they have done. They are very pricey. I spent over $500 for my dog to get his 1 year updated round of vaccinations.

This was the first vet my friend and I had taken my kittens to and it was not a good experience. We could not see them receive their first shots as we were told to wait in the lobby until the doctor would discuss with us on further necessary procedures. That seemed pretty shady if you ask me. When we did meet Dr. lee, I guess he automatically assumed that my friend and I did not speak English. Was it because our names sounded foreign? It didn’t affect me as much when he said my English was good but I dislike how he treated my friend by commenting and laughing that she was just nodding like she understands English. That was ignorant and unprofessional of him to say to a client he just met. Not to mention the prices are also unreasonably expensive. I took my babies to Gateway hospital for their next shots and their prices were fair and about half the price Westside charges. The vet technician at Gateway was also really helpful and detailed. I was asked to accompany my pets as they received their vaccines and this ensured me that they did get their shots. Hope this review would be an eye opener for Westside to improve on these aspects. Overall, I was disappointed and would recommend finding another vet hospital
