How to Save Money at Port City Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very kind and knowledgeable office. Always feel taken care of and feel completely comfortable trusting them with my dogs. Staff is very accommodating in scheduling, and extremely responsive with all phone calls and emails. They take their time addressing all points brought up during the exam and explore all different possibilities. Very reasonably priced and it is very clear they care about what they do. Would recommend to anybody.

I wish I could give more stars!!! From just checking in to performing life saving surgeries on my fur babies, this place is the best!! My 2 cats have had many issues over the past couple years include intestinal blockage almost killing him and the other has weight issues causing bladder stones. This staff has taken the sweetest care of my babies but also myself! I remember when my cat Jack had to get surgery and being told me had a chance of not making it since his condition had gotten so bad so quickly they let me sit in a room with him for nearly an hour just letting me sit with him and love on him. I remember one of the staff members coming in and bringing me water and tissues🩵 Luckily he made it because they do such amazing work and care so much for these pets. With my other kitty Peter Parker, he had gotten bladder stones which was obviously causing him a lot of pain and issues. They were able to very quickly find a solution which I would continue at home. I had very clear instructions on how to take care of him at home, I felt like I was given all the tools to take care of my babies and they’ve been great ever since! I wouldn’t trust literally anyone else with my babies!

Not happy with the medical service, my dog needed shots and he also had symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting we asked Dr. And she stated "I can't see what's up he looks pretty healthy to me I could do a blood test" we asked how much $ since we already spent 340.00 she said additional 200.oo so we noticed that it was all about the money 💰 she did not offered meds for diarrhea or vomiting. We called when we arrived home since my dug continues with the same condition she did not treat my dog as an emergency 😡 so we went to other veterinarian hospital and dog was diagnosed with a bad urinary infection got all meds and total 150.00 we will NEVER go back to that money hungry Veterinarian.

Dr. Claytor and her team are great. My dog needed emergency surgery on a Friday, to which they squeezed him in to exam him and did the surgery that day. The team and doc always get back to me with any answers I have in a timely manner. You can tell they really care about all the animals and will go out of the way to ease any worries you may have. Great place and would recommend!

Our pup is a brand new client and I can't speak more highly about PCAH! Not only is their electric file handling and report out of visits incredibly handy and convenient, their staff was excellent based on my husband and dog's visit with them. I am excited to continue working with them on the care of our dog. I'm thrilled they take the time to get your animal comfortable for visits, ensures care remains excellent from previous care (or improves in our case), and keeps you informed from start to finish.
