How to Save Money at Animal Wellness Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We moved to the Atlanta area last year. We had a fantastic veterinary clinic to take care of our two dogs for almost 10 years where the doctor and staff were highly competent, caring, and compassionate. Unfortunately, our experience at the Animal Wellness Clinic was quite the opposite in all aspects! The front desk staff, with the exception of one person, were never friendly or welcoming. We never felt we were welcome in the clinic. Recently, our older dog had an episode of difficult and fast breathing on a Saturday night. He improved after a few hours. We were concerned and wanted his vet Dr. Wilhite to evaluate and treat him as needed. We called the AWC office Monday morning for an appointment for the same day. The person who answered the phone said that Dr. Wilhite was booked for the day, but she would talk to her and call us back. We never got a call back, so we called back at which time we were told that Dr. Wilhite will see him for an emergency add-on charge of $100. This was another first for us. Every vet we have associated with always made a genuine effort to add our dogs to their schedule for any acute problem, and they always did with no extra charge. Since our older dog had improved over the weekend, and since the second dog had an appointment on Friday of the same week, the office said Dr. Wilhite would see both at the same visit. The older dog was also due for a routine shot which was also done at the same visit. We were never told that it was an emergency appointment, and we presumed that after 6 days, it was not an emergency. Both the appointments together took about 15 minutes. To our surprise, the clinic charged us the emergency add-on fee of $100 anyway! This was truly an unsettling experience for us. Our dog passed away from the same breathing problem episode, 5 days after the clinic visit. Every time after we visited the clinic, we would discuss finding another vet, but unfortunately, we did not do that until after the death of our older dog. We strongly feel that AWC is operated purely as a business entity. We truly regret bringing our dogs for care at the AWC.

Came to pick up our dog after surgery. Front desk staff said our last name sounds like we are in the mob. Hope this insensitive stereotyping does not carry over to customers with Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and other ethnic sounding names. It is literally so easy to be polite. Corny, lame and tired, do better.

He is a great doctor. He is very warm and available! Which was a big thing for me. He is great and I understand how he has made it 40 yrs in this business. I found a home for my kitten. I trust his knowledge! Yoshi is a happy kitty!

After almost 2 years of being ignored and dismissed by our old veterinarian, we decided to take our Great Pyrenees to Animal Wellness Clinic in Milton for a second opinion. Dr. Willhite walked in the room, looked at Yeti (my Pyr) and within LITERALLY 10 seconds made a preliminary diagnosis that she had Cushing's Disease, based on Yeti's posture and skin coloration. Dr. W ordered some tests and confirmed the diagnosis. She prescribed a course of treatment and the difference is night and day. Yeti also had a large tumor on her side that our old veterinarian was completely dismissive of. Dr. W removed the tumor and Yeti's breathing returned back to normal and it is obvious that she is feeling better. The incision scar in the photo below will give you an idea how large this tumor that we were repeatedly told was "no big deal" by our old vet was. Dr. W's knowledge and professionalism is absolutely top notch. After months or being dismissed by our old, incompetent vet, I am so thankful that we decided to trust our pets' care to Animal Wellness Clinic. The support staff at the clinic are always friendly and professional. The facility is spotlessly clean and has a nice walking area where your pet can get in some exercise and heed nature's call before or after visits. I could not be happier with Animal Wellness Clinic and recommend them without reservation.

This is the only place that we will take our 8 year old dog. Dr. Wilhite is fantastic, and her staff, who have been with her for years, are great. I highly recommend Animal Wellness Clinic.
