How to Save Money at Tugaloo Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been taking my pets to Tugaloo Animal Hospital for ove 15 years. Dr. Steele is one of the most wonderful and caring people I know. To some folks she may sound bossy but I guarantee it's because she has such a huge heart for the patients she cares for. I recently rescued a beautiful pup that had been dumped out on the road. She was beautiful, loved my dogs and my cat from the start. Had her first puppy exam and she was happy and healthy. A couple of days later she was not eating and getting weak from what looked like Parvo. Dr. Steele took my call at 11:30 pm and told me what to do. I took her in the next day. She continued to get worse, was on IVs and in pain. Dr. Steele was with her late at night, even on the days the office was closed. She kept me posted all the time and let me come spend time with this little puppy that someone had thrown out and I had come to love. Dr. Steele had been at the office for 12 hours caring for the pets staying there including my little abandoned pup when she called to let me know it was time. She waited and I was there in 5 minutes to say goodbye. Dr. Steele did everything possible to save little Pearl. She's even come out to my home after hours to help my older dog Lucky let go because it was too painful for him to have to come there. Dr. Steele does these things because she has a heart for her patients. A heart that breaks along with ours when we have to say goodbye. I truly admire and appreciate Dr. April Steele. She may be short and a little bossy, but she is an excellent vet with a heart of gold.

Dr. Steele and her staff have always treated my pets and myself with kindness and compassion. She isn’t afraid to refer to and or with specialists to diagnose uncommon issues. She listens when I describe behaviors that I encounter with my pets and helps me understand underlying reasons. She or her staff always call to check on my pets after appts. Her prices I have found to be very reasonable. We will gladly continue using her services.

This vet is so rude. I have went for years here. Never even seen the inside. She obviously does not care about the animals. She would give me drugs to give to trim nails that didn't even work because she said my cat was a danger to society. Your a vet yet can't even deal with a common house cat. I needed rabbie shot nail trimming and flea drops each visit. She couldn't even do this. Don't answer phones. Doesn't allow people inside. She should be aware people think she is strange. They whole experience is strange recommend to go else where if you love you your furbabies.

Dr. Steele has been available for our pets when we've needed her. She is compassionate and kind and really cares for the welfare of the animals. Her staff always calls to check on my pets after an appt. We have appreciated her care and attention to our fur babies over the last few years.

It is the Spring of 2023 and this office will not let you go in with your pet. Dr Steele did not listen to what I explained was happening with my cat, Scar was injured, Dr Steele misdiagnosed him and I did not know enough to stand up at the time. Yes, my cat was 5 months past due for his rabies booster, however, he Did Not Show ANY clinical signs or symptoms other than neurological symptoms in his hip area of rabies. He had been walking around and eating and did not show signs of distress, agitation, aggression, no visible salivating at all and it had been 5 days at that time. He was obviously hurt in his back leg or hip area. No signs of a bite, road or auto rash just walking like his hip may be out of joint or something. And he would wrench when you touch his backside. If I can not be allowed to be present during an exam, I won't let them see my pet. I do not think this was a misdiagnosis, I truly believe it was a call based solely on the idea that my cat was 5 months past due for his vacation and she did not even give him a real examination.
