How to Save Money at Happy Tails Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my lab River to see Dr. Kleine for her annual visit. He was extremely patient with her wild self while examining her. He was very thorough and made sure all my questions were answered. We loved Valerie as our tech. She immediately gave River a bunch of toys to keep her busy and also had so much patience with her. Valerie even gave River a pup cup after vaccines! I appreciated that they took time with us and did not make it feel rushed. We will definitely be back!

I bring all of my dogs here and love all of the staff. Heather, Karen, and Alex (and plenty more I can't name by name) are all extremely helpful and polite. Dr Klein has seen my first pup since he was a puppy & he's approaching 7yrs now & he will continue to be my vet through all of my dogs lives. I recently adopted a new pup, Stretch, from Barrow County and we came in last week and they took such good care of him! Thank you for treating my dogs like they're your own!

I absolutely love taking my dog here. The staff is always so amazing and sweet. My dog is a little bit of a scaredy cat and they always make sure she feels safe, even if it means all of us are sitting on the floor together. Dr. Klein and Dr. Tanner have been amazing with helping my dog with her severe allergies. And all the vet assistances are super thoughtful. They even make sure my daughter is taken care of, having a show for her to watch and coloring books! 10/10 y’all!

Horrible people at this location. I had to bring my cat in for an abscess on her face. When I went to pick her up I told them I could pay part of the bill now and the rest when I got paid on Friday. They called the police on me, without warning and with my 8 year old daughter with me, and told them I refused to pay the bill. The police, so thankful for them, told the manager that they wouldn’t charge me with anything since I was offering to pay part of the bill now and make it right when I got paid again. The manager then told me that they were going to keep my cat until I could pay in full and will be charging me a daily boarding fee until I come to get her. I ended up calling a family member who was kind enough to wire me some money to get my cat away from these awful people. The manager also told me that the receptionist had told me they were going to call the police, which she never did. They wanted me to sign something saying that I agree to be charged with theft of services if I didn’t pay within 24 hours, I told them that I would sign it if they changed it to Friday but the decided to call the police on me instead. When I went back inside to get my cat after the money was sent to me I told the receptionist that she was horrible for what she had done, she didn’t say anything to me, not an ‘I’m sorry’ not any kind of ‘this was a misunderstanding’ just asked if I wanted a paper receipt or an emailed one. Please don’t go here. I will never return, even though I’ve paid them close to $2000 in vet bills this past year for my 2 cats.

We've gone to Dr. Klein for several years now (even after moving 40 minutes away) and have always valued his guidance and care for our dog. The facility is super clean, and the staff is friendly. The office manager, Samantha, is also excellent and has been a great help in addressing any questions or concerns we've had. Happy Tails is a great place to take your pet.
