How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you so much for saving my baby Odin. Our local vet was ready to give up on him and suggested “ humane euthanasia “. I brought him Friday night and he stayed over the weekend. He was ready to go home and so happy to see me when I picked him up on Monday evening . The veterinarians here are top notch. He was in DKA, they stabilized his blood sugar and took great care of him. The medical treatment that Odin received here saved his life and I will be forever grateful. I drove almost 2 hours from Perry that Friday night, and I believe that the reason he is still with me today is all due to the excellent staff and the awesome veterinarian that took care of him that weekend.

Within 6 weeks of each other I had to bring my two cats ( Vixxen & Kidd ) to Blue Pearl due to advanced kidney disease. Needless to say, an extremely difficult time for all pets and owners involved. Blue Pearl was extremely sensitive and understanding regarding the situation. I was encouraged to call anytime ( 24hrs) if I felt the need to just check in on my babies, which helped me cope with the situation a little easier. Blue Pearl was very thorough in the treatment of both animals, they also took the time to explain the follow up treatment and was very gracious with questions I had once we all left the hospital. When pet emergencies arise, and they will, Blue Pearl is your best choice for your animals wellbeing.

We came in early this morning with our goldendoodle who was vomiting for the second night in a row. Regardless of hearing we may need to wait for over an hour while the doctor was in surgery (totally understandable, being that it’s an emergency veterinarian and our pup was not in a dire situation), we were served and communicated to really quickly and transparently - someone came out to speak to us to update us on the status of when he’d be seen, asked for symptoms, explained process, etc. They took him back after about 30 minutes or so and continued transparent, compassionate communication and care to us and for him. So thankful for Dr. Kelsey Smith and her team for caring for our little guy! We came home relieved and informed, which is exactly what you can hope for as a result of an ER vet visit. We will be back (well, only when we need, of course.)

Our 14 year old dog had cancer on his elbow. We brought him to Blue Pearl to ask about surgery. We specifically asked for the surgery not to be too aggressive Because he’s an old dog and we just want him to be comfortable for the rest of his life. The vet told us the recovery time would be 10-14 days in a cast. We’re now on week 16. 16 weeks in a cast and the wound is still open even after a second surgery. We don’t feel like we were heard about the initial surgery or the second surgery and our dog is still suffering. If they had told us the recovery was going to be 10-14 weeks instead of days we would have chosen a different path for our dog.

Thank god for this place… my dog was bit multiple times by a copperhead and I immediately rushed him to this Vet. They took him back and started treatment immediately and were so attentive and amazing. The female doctor was fantastic, she walked me through the treatment, the best way to keep it budget friendly, and was just so personable. I’ve never gone to a vet where they seem to care more about saving pets than the money aspect but here THEY DO! Between the doctor and techs and even the receptionists they were incredible and I’m so glad I came to them… thank you Blue Pearl Team for making this scary incident so much easier…
