How to Save Money at Winter Park Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

UPDATE: After taking lots of time to share with me the details of Toby’s evaluation, treatment, surgery, etc I now feel confident that my pup did have the attention of the animal hospital staff including the medical director. When the only information communicated to me initially was reading the transfer info they understood why I came to my initial conclusion. As existing clients took my suddenly sick and in pain dog in at 7am. They did labs and X-rays and recommended surgery. Never repeated labs. He was critical. Transferred him to emergency animal hospital since no one Is there at night. He was triaged with a temp of 94, glucose 40 and barely any blood pressure. This vets worked full time to try to save my dog but he passed at 1am. WP animal hospital had no explanation as to why he was not more closely monitored or why labs weren’t repeated. They are also the most expensive vet in the area. If their expertise warranted this OK. But NO. Photo of my deceased dog 😢

Came here on Friday because my little girl bunny was sick and her vet couldn't see her for 2 weeks. From booking the appt, to Calvin ( the nicest Vet Tech ever) and Dr Looks Care was AMAZING and they even called to follow-up. Plus it was not crazy expensive either- Bring your Fur-Babies here if they need help and ya love them! They will be my primary vet from now on!!!

Best animal hospital ever! We’ve been bringing our bunny here for about a year for regular checkups. Recently we became concerned about a potential respiratory issue. Dr Los Kamp and the entire staff, as usual, were very attentive, patient and thorough with all the exams. This time our bunny needed to have dental surgery, which was very frightening for us. Dr Los Kamp carefully explained the procedures and patiently answered a million questions for us. He expertly handled the teeth trimming and the molar extraction. We followed his after care instructions to the letter, and were extremely happy and surprised to see our bunny slowly eating hay again the very next morning. We’ve moved all over the country and tried several hospitals … WPVH is simply the best! The staff, the loving atmosphere, and the medical skill are top-notch. 🐰❤️

LINDSAY IS THE BEST. Not only with her experience of emergency and care for dogs helped reassure me and my pet. But her attitude on helping me mentally digest what was going on helped relaxed me in my case of emergency. So glad to have found some one who not only loves her job but loves who she works with as well. Thank you so much Lindsay. So glad I can count on you for my pets needs!!

Dr. Newman and Dr. Moore are the best doctors my dogs have ever had. They go above and beyond in the care and attention they provide my 2 dogs, Yogi and Bear. Bear is my 15 year old Beagle who suffers from congestive heart failure. Dr. Newman takes extra care in providing medication and advice so she can live the rest of her days as happy and comfortable as possible. My 10 year old dog Yogi, has suffered from Cushing's Disease for at least 3 years. 3 previous vets were not able to her manage her symptoms. Dr.Moore took over her care Sept of 2022, and I am happy to say that he is the first doctor to get her symptoms under control allowing my Yogi to live a comfortable life. I am so grateful that Dr. Newman and Dr. Moore are my girl's doctors. I am also so happy with the entire staff at Winter Park Veterinary Hospital. The are caring and provide exceptional customer service. Thank You Winter Park Veterinary Hospital
