How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Went in for a routine visit and to address concerns about bumps on my 9 1/2 year old mini-goldendoodle, Ason. The vet recommended cytology testing on July 31. I paid hundreds of dollars for these tests, which were meant to determine whether the growths were malignant or otherwise something to be worried about. A week passed with no follow-up, so I called. The receptionist told me the results were in but could not give them over the phone, and said the vet would call me. A few days later, after no response, I called again and left a message. Still nothing. I finally logged into the Banfield website around August 7 and saw the results had been uploaded without any notification. They were highly technical, so I had to interpret the report on my own, and the findings appeared benign. I received no contact from the prescribing vet at all. On September 5, more than a month later, a Dr. Hannah called to say he noticed the original vet had never gone over the results with me. By then I already knew what the report said, so I did not call back. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this Banfield location. The follow-up on an important health concern for my dog was poor. It felt like a corporate clinic focused on wellness plans and billing rather than real care for pets or the concerns of their owners. I am giving two stars, as the test was performed, and a non-attending vet eventually followed up, five weeks later. Update in response to Banfield’s reply: The response from Banfield was the same generic message they post on other reviews. It did not address the specific issue described here, which was a month-long lack of follow-up on diagnostic test results for my dog. The reply referenced only a general “experience,” without acknowledging the communication breakdown or the details of the situation. This further reinforces the original point that this location operates more like a corporate clinic than a practice providing attentive, individualized care. If you want local presence and relationship, go elsewhere.

From walking in and being greeted by Adam ( the ) Best, to meeting Sam the fabulous lead nurse, and talking with the wonderful Dr Concepcion 👩‍⚕️, simply what an Exceptional Team ! What great care and love they have for my animal, and the patience and time everyone took to answer any and all questions. I’m glad to be confident that this team is the right group to take care of my fur baby. Thank you all and very much appreciated !

I scheduled an appointment for my pet through Banfield’s online system and received a confirmation. When I arrived on time, I was told they couldn’t see us because “other appointments were already scheduled” and that the online calendar doesn’t always sync properly with their actual schedule. To make matters worse, the office staff was not helpful and showed zero concern for my pet or the inconvenience this caused. No apology, no effort to accommodate us—just a shrug and an excuse about their system. If your online booking system doesn’t work, don’t offer it. This experience was incredibly frustrating and left me questioning the level of care and professionalism here. I’ll be taking my pet elsewhere to a practice that values their patients and respects people’s time.

Drove 75 miles for a 5pm appointment. We were running 5 minutes late, we called ahead and the phone rang as if the location was closed. The sign at the door and online had a 6pm close time. We arrived at 5:07pm and the doors were locked, the lights were off and no one was around. We attempted to call support, they forwarded us to the complaints department and they hung up on us as soon as we were forwarded. Completely unprofessional, lack of communication. No notice of the place closing early or a canceled appointment anywhere. Our day and time was wasted.

I had a 5pm appointment today and arrived at 5. The website and door both say open til 6, but there is no one here and no one notified me about my appointment either being cancelled or whatever happened. Editing to add, we spoke to a vet tech that came outside. We were told they do not take appointments via the Banfield app/email, only phone, and do not have doctors available on Tuesdays. Claimed they called us, they did not. They're accusing us of having the wrong number on our account, but it's the same one we've always used to make appointments. This place lies, stay as far away as you can.
