How to Save Money at Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough good things about this practice and their team of techs and doctors - especially if you have a rabbit or other exotics. The folks at Paws and Claws are so professional, kind, thorough, and knowledgeable. You can tell without a doubt that they love their patients like their own pets based on how they go above and beyond the call of duty. I have patronized multiple local vets and haven’t been satisfied with the level of care my pets have received until I started going to Paws and Claws. Please trust me when I say that they are in a league of their own and have set the golden standard! When my bunny had a sudden loss of mobility in her back legs, they didn’t hesitate to squeeze us in so she could be seen that same day. Once we got there, they took us in immediately and let me know what was going on each step of the way, giving me such peace of mind. They really are nothing short of incredible! I won’t be taking my bunny anywhere else. Love, love, love this clinic and would highly recommend them to anyone in the area. Thank you Paws and Claws!

You will not find a better vet office for your animals! I have had animals my whole life (as has my husband) and we both agree we are so glad to have found Paws and Claws! From the moment you walk into the office you can tell how much they love animals. The staff is so compassionate and caring. They truly care about your pet. Probably as much as you do. I highly recommend! If you want your animals cared for, bring them here! We see Dr. Swift (phenomenal) but I cannot say enough amazing things about everyone.

My husband and I own two ferrets, Goblin and Gremlin, and we were lucky to live in a town with an exotic vet. We've been with Paws&Claws since we got our girls, roughly a year and half ago, and have had nothing but exemplary service. We even boarded with them when we went on our belated honeymoon. Recently, Goblin (pictured) began vomiting, acting lethargic and passing loose stool. Despite the office being busy and our usual doctor being out of the office, the vet decided this was an issue that we didn't want to wait on, so we were fit in as soon as possible. We were seen quickly, and even though our ferret was uncooperative, our vet and tech were nothing but professional. They went the extra mile to make sure she wasn't unnecessarily stressed about her situation. At every stage of examination and treatment, they asked my husband and I what we wanted and what we were comfortable with. We decided to follow their recommendations which included radiographs to see if there was a blockage due to a sensitive spot on her stomach, an anti-inflammatory for her stomach, an injection of fluids for dehydration, an anti-nausea prescription, and a next-day follow-up. At her follow-up, she was much more herself. While not totally back to normal, the vet remarked that she was more active, and the doctor was encouraged to hear that her stool was improving. We were offered another set of radiographs, but after a manual examination showed that her stomach was no longer sensitive, we declined. We were not pressured to do so, and were involved in every stage of our girl's treatment. Happy to say that Goblin finished her course of anti-inflammatory medication and is back to her usual trouble-making self. The staff, both front and back, is incredibly friendly, which helped with such a stressful situation, and I can't recommend this team highly enough for exotics and non-exotic pets.

Absolute best care and consideration for my Ferret. In beyond thankful to you guys. You allowed me to come in an hour early, even though your clinic isn’t available usually for exotics until later on. You pulled amazing strings and handled my fragile old lady with the most considerate of care. I will be recommending you guys to everyone. You’re amazing!!!
