How to Save Money at Oakwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Oakwood worked me into their schedule without any hassle, and then actually wrote my name down and called me the next day when they had a cancellation. My other vet never seems to have any availability. Last year I found out my cat had stomach cancer only after taking him to the emergency vet because my usual vet couldn’t see him for an entire month. I don’t know if it’s because Tallahassee is a sizeable city, but there are like 40 vets in town. I didn’t think my (new) cat’s problem was an emergency, therefore not worth a trip to the emergency clinic. I’m just grateful that Jennifer in the front office was very accommodating and understanding (even though I called 10 minutes until close), Lizzie the vet tech was thorough and informative, and Dr. Regalado was caring and clear and her instructions. I will definitely be using Oakwood as my primary clinic for this cat. Thank you so much! Edit: Someone called me the next day to check on my cat which I really appreciated. I also had another recent wellness appointment and the tech (Alyssa? Rainbow glasses) was informed, patient, and amazingly sweet. She even called me about something minor to make sure my cat was okay! I really appreciate this office; they’ve put my mind at ease.

The staff at Oakwood are always so kind and professional. They provide quality veterinary care and service at an affordable price. I’m in graduate school, so I really appreciate being able to come here and afford to take my cat in for checkups / keep him healthy. It’s also very easy to make an appointment with them and be seen in a timely manner, with practically no wait once you arrive. Very grateful to have a good vet nearby because my cat Boris is my whole world.

I wish I could give them 10 stars honestly because they go above and beyond (and even went across town for paperwork for my cat!) at Oakwood. My cat has been a patient there for a few years now and we’ve always had a wonderful experience. Not only are they kind and professional, but they’re thorough, competent, and extremely caring. Both the receptionist and vet tech were great today, and Dr. Hurley was so incredible. On top of the typical check up, she really went the extra mile for Lilith to make sure we were all set for domestic and international travel. She is very understanding and has great recommendations. Bring your pets to Oakwood —you won’t regret it!

UPDATE: They responded to my review making erroneous and exaggeration on my dog, as most people tend to do with certain breeds they are prejudiced against. As a general message to the the people at Oakwood Animal Hospital who seem to think it’s okay to lie and exaggerate for their own sake. I understand the need to want to cover your own negligence, but when we told your staff multiple times what to do to work with our dog you ignored us. We told your staff multiple times to stop staring directly into his eyes as that triggers reactivity due to fear. So when you provoke the fear and do NOTHING to even attempt working with my dog you lie. I had a similar experience with the last vet you are referring to who lied on her records because I do not stand for my dog being mistreated. I am his advocate and she never treated him either because I didn’t let her. We never went past the first appointment due to her arrogance. Similar to what appears to be happening with Patrick Vickers, who never even tried. Pathetic excuses from a clinic that seems to be salvaging what little they have left. I know many customers who are canceled on last minute because the vets decided they no longer were available? You cannot continue blaming animals behaviors on YOUR actions. Learn and Do better.

Osoko our 6 year old bobtail girl passed away the next day after her visit at Oakwood I feel that we were not offered anything that could of saved her life and I feel that the dr knew she wasn’t going to make it from his initial diagnosis but still we were sent home with nothing more then children’s antibiotics and a rabies vaccine and having paid over $700 bill I think more could have been done or offered such as overnight fluids and food this just felt like take our money and there was no caring involved we said we don’t have enough money but we will apply for the care credit to cover the visit which we did I wish I wouldn’t of listened to my friend and maybe just went back to north monroe instead You should never make your practice an about quick turn out and the fast buck. And then when the doctor called to give the results of the $200 cbc work which told us nothing end I said she’s on her way to dying he implied well let me know if I can do anything else for you like what I come and pay to have her put down? And you max out the credit we had to apply for and now we have another bill that we really couldn’t afford in the first place no no thank you. Do better if I was you and you were looking for a place to take your loved ones I would keep looking especially if they are sick. Well maybe if you have the money and no worries you can get the care they need but do you want to take that chance?
