How to Save Money at Northwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My kitten had a ruptured eye. Northwood Animal Hospital was the closest emergency vet that wasn’t full or closed (I had called 3 other places…none could take him). The wait wasn’t very long and everyone was very kind and reassuring. They got my kitten in for emergency surgery a couple hours after the exam and had him done in about an hour and a half (he had an enucleation). I’m so grateful for what they did for Zuko. Less than 12 hours later he felt so much better, he definitely got a second chance at life thanks to the veterinarian and the vet techs working that night. The surgery was on the high end cost-wise because it was done on emergency hours, but that’s completely understandable and expected. I definitely recommend this place to anyone within a couple hours of Tally— it’s worth it!

Well..... we had an emergency visit last night for our 135lb rottie and the staff (the men) in particular were so great. Steven, Donovan, and the Veterinarian were so incredibly kind. Shout out to these guys for helping our baby bear.....the lady techs were kinda mean but that's ok. They took care of our baby and that's all that matters.

I have been taking my cats here for the past 3 years. Always amazing experiences. Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Takes concerns seriously and provides helpful advice. Very gentle with my anxious cats and understands how to best provide care for them while minimizing their anxiety. Dr. Smith is especially amazing - provides thorough explanations and answers my questions with detail. After years of other veterinarian clinics dismissing concerns and overlooking my cat's health complications, Northwood was the first place to take the issue seriously. They found answers and helped my cat live his healthy, happy life. I am so grateful for Northwood. I will never take my cats anywhere else while in Tallahassee.

If you have a small animal (guinea pig, in my case) and you're looking for a *real deal* small animal vet, THIS. IS. YOUR. PLACE. I moved here (work) from another city where I had 3 dedicated guinea pig specialists within an hour's drive, only to find that a Google search for the same in Tallahassee turned up no results. I was extremely worried that I'd done my pigs a disservice by moving them here, but after my visit with Dr Cavell I have absolutely no more fear. My appointment was not rushed, and she took the time to explain the diagnostics in beautiful detail. This place is the gold standard. Other practices, take note.

This place and their staff are phenomenal. I’ve been coming here for years and the employees always go out of their way to be so kind, compassionate and comfortable for my pups (even during Covid when curbside was the only option). Front desk staff are so friendly and accommodating, the techs are so welcoming and knowledgeable and Dr. Brown is the best. I never feel like I’m being overcharged or rushed out the door when expressing any concerns during a visit. Super grateful for this staff and all that they do!!
