How to Save Money at Animal Specialty & Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The best vets and staff EVER!! My cat was gravely ill swallowed so much string and got it wrapped around his tongue. The cost for exam, removal and sedation was out of my financial abilities and I was devastating thinking I was going to lose my cat. The staff saw my pain and discounted the price, removed 80 of string, freed his tongue and have him fluids. I literally cried because, this was such an amazing act of kindness that I'm very positive saved his life. If I could rate them higher I would!

I visited the Animal Specialty & Emergency Hospital yesterday afternoon. I had to bring my 8 year old cat because she was refusing to eat and had lost a lot of weight. She had also been vomiting after meals and meowing like she was in pain. The staff was super helpful over the phone and I was able to bring my cat same day. Everyone from the front desk, to the techs in the room and the doctors were very caring and compassionate. Unfortunately for my cat it was too late, she had stomach cancer that was to advanced and in pain so it was most merciful to put her to sleep. The doctor showed me the scan, the tumor and we discussed the cost and outcome of a surgery and chemo which did not seem practical taking into consideration not only the cost but the quality of life and pain for my pet to go through major surgery and chemo. I made the choice to put her down and the team was so supportive in helping me go through this difficult decision. They swathed my cat in a nice blanket to keep her safe and comfortable, walked me through the whole process and even when it was a difficult decision it was the right decision and done in the most compassionate, loving and supporting way. Losing a long time companion is very difficult and I do appreciate that the pricing for their services was reasonable and that they did not take advantage of a vulnerable situation. I am grateful for the loving experience.

We brought our 4 week old kitten here he had a seizure this morning. The staff up front were great, the staff in the back however very nice and respectful, they didn't inform me of anything, our kitten had a bad seizure and we were never informed. Then the doctor said they had given him 2 medications while he was here, then an hour later, the nurse said they were going give him those but hadn't yet. So this turned into a 4 hour wait, and wonder appointment .

My cat was lethargic and just not feeling well so my husband brought him here. I rushed up from work to meet him there. The receptionist was so very nice, and let me in the back right away. A few minutes after my arrival, the doctor came in and was very rude. No bedside manner. His 1st sentence to us was, your cat is dying." He then proceeded to tell us that my cat would need a procedure (he had a urinary blockage) and it wasn't guaranteed to work. That was very understandable since I work in the medical field myself. The Doctor told us several times the same things, as well as what he was dealing with with other animals at that time. I felt as though he was trying to scare and rush us. GE then went to get the tech to give us a quote. The bill would have been upwards of 3800 and may not work, or the problem could have come back etc. My husband and I decided to put our sweet boy down. The tech brought our cat back to us, and we said our good byes. As we were, thr cat passed away on his own. The tech was genuinely sweet and apologized for our loss. She actually said that several times. The check out lady came in to collect our payment so we wouldn't have to walk back through the lobby. Very compassionate staff...except the doctor. Pet parents cone in sometimes very scared and this man had no compassion for a sick animal...just compassion for himself and what he had to do once he was done with us.
