How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

How do you leave -5 stars? My friend Gizmo was brought here (unbeknownst to owner) and put down without owners permission, or any contact to owner. They never even checked for a chip; “for location purposes only” (Really Deb, are you that clueless?) even though Gizmo had a microchip, and all information said, only owner will make these decisions. I wouldn’t take my enemies pet here! Just because somebody is possibly paying the bill, doesn’t give you the right to kill somebody else’s dog. You should be ashamed. Pull down the sign & lock your doors forever.

I brought my dachshund Slink into the ER around 3am Monday morning and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I feel bad that I couldn’t have expressed my gratitude more that morning, but I was just a space cadet trying not to absolutely lose my marbles over everything. You all took such good care of my baby and provided me with a probable diagnosis and referred me to the right people. Slink is now on medication for his CHF and is responding so well. I am so, so thankful to still have him here and I know it wouldn’t be possible without you all. You were so knowledgeable, kind and gracious to us. He’s home resting, but very much back to his peppy self when he’s not catching up on his sleep. Thank you thank you thank you.

This is the first Emergency Vet I’ve ever encountered that was willing to treat my dog symptomatically, and not insist upon a lot of expensive tests. I have an older dog that has multiple medical conditions, so I only wanted to treat symptoms. My dog received fluids, two IV medication‘s, and came home with three prescriptions, all for under $400. The staff was wonderful - all the way around. While waiting, a vet tech comes out to check the pets to triage them. In all of my many years of experience with Emergency Vet, I can say this was by far my best experience. They also have cold, bottled water, coffee, and snacks available. You might have to wait for several hours, but it will be worth your time.

So incredibly thankful for this emergency clinic and all of the beautiful people who work here. We brought our pup Cooper in after being hit by a car on the highway Saturday night. The team came out ready with a cart to help bring our baby inside to get looked at. We were greeted with open arms and kindness. The staff treated our pup like part of their family and kept us updated throughout the night on how he was doing. Kennedy and Chance were absolute angels and we couldn’t be more grateful to have him in their care. Very knowledgable, empathetic and genuine in explaining the condition and future recovery plans for Coop. He ended up having a fractured radius and a dislocated shoulder which they splint up to prevent further damage before bringing him to a specialist. Given the situation, we were overwhelmed and scared but Cooper was given the best care and we appreciate you guys and the amazing team you are. Thank you for all you do!❤️

I am not from this area but Thursday afternoon we brought in our medium/small dog, she had a heat episode and I was very worried for her well-being. When we got there they were already almost full with other animals, they still made the time to take care of Lacey. They gave no judgement and made sure she was okay. She stayed over night and when we came to get her the next morning she was jumping on the vets and very excited. I could tell they took good care of her and she felt comfortable being there. They were amazing and I highly recommend them. Not being from the area I was extremely nervous going in, and they definitely exceeded my expectations and made me feel very comfortable leaving my anxious dog in their care. Since leaving we have given Lacey the meds as they said and she has been doing 10x better. Highly recommend and will forever appreciate their help.
