How to Save Money at Veterinary Dental Specialties & Oral Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Veterinary Dental Specialties & Oral Surgery – Dr. Tim Halloway & Team I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Tim Halloway, Kate, Jenn, Tara, and the entire team at Veterinary Dental Specialties! From the moment I walk through their doors, I feel like I’m visiting old friends. There are always smiles, support, and genuine care in every interaction. Their team feels like family—kind, compassionate, patient, and incredibly thorough. They stay current with the latest dental technology and truly invest in every animal’s wellbeing. My dogs absolutely adore them! They’ve never shown an ounce of anxiety walking into the practice—in fact, they greet the staff with excitement and affection because they remember how safe and cared for they felt during every visit. The calm, nurturing energy of this team is unmatched. You can tell they’ve worked together for many years, and that family bond radiates throughout the entire clinic. 💝 I would 100% recommend Veterinary Dental Specialties to all my friends, neighbors and family!! Hands down, the best veterinary clinic in Northeast Florida! 💛🐩🦮 P.S. Totally worth the drive over the Buckman to Orange Park!

Our dog saw Dr. Holloway and her team this week for a cleaning, some dental work and extractions. The care our best friend received was outstanding and she is on the road to feeling so much better. Dr. Holloway took the time to go through my dog’s X-rays with me and her suggestions for treatment. I was able to see the areas of concern and it was comforting knowing our dog was getting amazing care. Thanks so much to Dr. Holloway and the team! We appreciate everything you have done for our friend!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Veterinary Dental Specialties for my 8 years old Dobbie (Baron) and I can’t express enough how positive my experience was, which prompted me to write this review. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and welcoming staff who clearly care deeply about animals. It was evident that everyone there shares a genuine passion for their work, which instantly put me at ease. Dr Tim Holloway’s extensive knowledge and professionalism truly stood out. He took the time to listen to all my concerns regarding my baby’s dental health, thoroughly reviewed his history, and patiently explained all the available options. I appreciated how he weighed different scenarios, helping me understand what would be best for Baron. I felt my baby was in great hands, and I left the office feeling confident about the care he would receive. I would highly recommend Veterinary Dental Specialties to anyone looking for a compassionate and knowledgeable team to care for their pets. Thank you for making our visit such a positive one! Inna

I brought my Chihuahua Gizmo here, I knew she would need a few extractions and she had periodontal disease. I was worried to have the dental done because she also has microvascular dysplasia and her liver is unusually small. Dr. Holloway is very kind and took as much time as I needed to answer every question I had. I never felt rushed or unimportant. Dr. Holloway has additional training in veterinarian dentistry in addition to standard veterinarian training. They have state of the art equipment and a cone CT scan that's all included in the estimate they give you. I'm very impressed and will only come here from now on, for my Gizmo's teeth cleanings. If your dog has a disease and you're afraid of having anesthesia for their cleaning this is the place to bring them. They consult protocol with a anesthesiologist that they have on call, or you can even pay an additional fee to have the anesthesiologist present like I did. I'm so thankful for Dr. Holloway, her friendly staff and the anesthesiologist. Thank you all so much.

This is definitely a specialty dental practice who handles the most difficult cases. They treated our dog with incredible care, compassion and skill. However, this level of care costs A LOT. No insurance covers their services so be prepared for your bill. We are blessed our dog is better and are grateful but the financial burden has left a bad taste in our mouths. Update: Our dog needed a very extensive and serious procedure where all of her teeth were removed and holes in the roof of her mouth had to be closed following a severe nasal infection. It has been a few years now since this was performed at Veterinary Dental Specialists and I want to thank them for adding years to our dog's life! She has returned to behaving like a joyful, young toy poodle chasing after leaves, hopping around the house when excited and enjoying her life once again. No more infections, no stinky breath or constant "shnuffing" all the time trying to clear secretions. She is full of pep and a joy to cuddle once again. Thank you for giving us our furbaby back!
